Principal Research Scientist (NPL) / Senior Professorial Fellow (University of Edinburgh)
Ground-based remote sensing of greenhouse gases
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the University of Edinburgh are making a strategic investment to appoint a Principal Research Scientist (NPL) / Senior Professorial Fellow (University of Edinburgh) to develop research in metrology for ground-based remote sensing of greenhouse gases (GHG). Applications are invited from innovative researchers of international standing for this joint position in which the jobholder will be a member of both NPL and the University of Edinburgh, and should expect to be based at NPL approximately 80% of the time.
The successful candidate will be based within the Environmental Measurement Group at NPL and within the Global Change Research Institute as part of the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. The Environmental Measurement Group has a strong international profile, delivering underpinning research (via the UK's National Measurement System), technical R&D and services in the fields of emissions validation and air quality. The Group already has an impact in the fields of agriculture and landfill gas, and has the potential to impact emerging areas such as carbon capture and storage and fracking. This work is a critical part of the high-profile Centre for Carbon Measurement at NPL which provides links with policy-makers, industry and the media to increase the impact and profile of this work. The University of Edinburgh is a vibrant, research-led academic community; the School of GeoSciences includes world-class researchers in GHG and air quality science. School academics lead two out of the three NERC-funded projects that will help quantify the magnitude and uncertainty of UK emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O using advanced statistical techniques to integrate information collected from ground-based, aircraft, shipborne, and satellite measurements of GHGs.
Role
This new joint position will take advantage of complementary activities conducted in both organisations. You will have a strong track record of international-quality publications and research funding in making and interpreting ground-based measurements of greenhouse gases. You will have the ability to attract leading researchers and excellent students to your group, and to form effective partnerships with colleagues to increase the breadth of scientific applications and to drive high-quality publication outputs. The main responsibilities will involve:
* Providing scientific leadership to a team of researchers at NPL.
* Securing research funding, working with colleagues, bid managers and collaborators.
* Making a substantial, sustainable and high-quality contribution to research in the field of ground-based GHG monitoring, including the development and communication of ongoing vision and strategy for the science area capability.
* Ensuring continuing development of staff and participating in the recruitment of new staff.
* Engaging in knowledge transfer within public fora, influencing scientific direction in the interests of NPL, the University of Edinburgh and UK plc.
* Contributing to the development and delivery of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes within Edinburgh, on a pro rata basis.
Application Procedure
For further information about the post, please contact Professor Sandy Tudhope, Head of School (sandy.tudhope at ed.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0)131 650 8508), or Dr Michael Adeogun, Head of Analytical Science Division (michael.adeogun at npl.co.uk or telephone +44 (0)20 8943 7177).
Please note that, for professorial positions, including a senior professional fellow, the University requires a minimum of three references: two academic references and sufficient employer references to cover the previous five years of work.
To apply for the position, please email your CV and a brief Research and Teaching Proposal/Statement (maximum three pages) that clearly describes your personal vision for ground-based remote sensing of greenhouse gases at NPL and the University of Edinburgh, and which also addresses the needs of the UK environmental monitoring industry, to NPL's Resourcing Manager: sally.williams at npl.co.uk quoting reference: NPL/EDIN01.
Closing date for applications: Monday 2 June 2014
