The Department of Geology at Bates College invites applications for a
one-year sabbatical replacement position in low temperature geochemistry,
beginning fall 2014. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential
for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, welcome the
opportunity for close interaction with serious students in a senior thesis
advisory role, and share with other members of the department
responsibility for General-Education courses. Field-based and laboratory
projects, and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range
of instructional opportunities.

The successful candidate will teach an introductory course in global
change/environmental geology, a sophomore/junior level course in
environmental geochemistry, a 300-level course in an area of their
specialty and a 5 week field/lab course in an area of their own expertise.
Facilities include a staff-supported Environmental Geochemistry Laboratory
with ICP-OES, EA/GC-c-IRMS, and GC-FID, as well as staff-supported Imaging
and Computation Center, GIS and mobile GIS capabilities. A full-time
departmental assistant in instruction provides logistical support for the
introductory laboratories.

Completion, or near completion, of a PhD in the earth sciences is required
for this position. Review of applications begins April 1 and will continue
until the position is filled. Applicants should submit electronically, in
PDF format, to Nancy LePage, Project Specialist, 207-786-6480 at
academicservices at bates.edu a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement on
teaching, and graduate school transcripts. Applicants are also encouraged
to submit course syllabi and teaching evaluations. Applicants should
arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the email address
above, in PDF or Word format. Please include your last name and GEO R2702
in the subject line of all submissions. Employment is contingent on
successful completion of a background check.

Bates College and the Geology Department are committed to increasing the
diversity of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can
contribute to this goal are encouraged to apply and to identify their
strengths and experiences in this area.
