FACULTY POSITION IN AVALANCHE HAZARDS RESEARCH & MANAGEMENT

The School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser
University (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada) seeks to fill a
tenure-track faculty position in the area of Avalanche Hazards Research
and Management. The successful candidate will qualify and meet the
criteria for a NSERC Industry Research Chair and will develop a program
of research and teaching with the goal to improve avalanche safety.
Final authorization for this position is contingent on the candidate
being successful in his/her application to NSERC. Resource and
Environmental Management is a dynamic graduate school in which both
social and natural scientists apply multi-disciplinary approaches to
research in resource and environmental management. Suitable candidates
will have:

(1) a Ph.D. in environmental or earth science and a strong research
interest in the application of avalanche science to policy, management
and human dimensions.
(2) a strong quantitative focus, such as in the areas of physical
hazards, risk and decision analysis, risk communication, spatial
analysis, and relevant social science techniques.
(3) an ability to guide research and teaching in a diverse,
multi-disciplinary environment involving collaboration between natural
and social scientists. The successful candidate will teach graduate and
undergraduate courses, supervise graduate students, and conduct
research. Relevant teaching experience is desirable.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. However, Canadians and
permanent residents will be given priority. Simon Fraser University is
committed to employment equity and encourages applications from all
qualified women and men, including visible minorities, aboriginal
people, and persons with disabilities. Please note that this position
is contingent upon available funding and is subject to final approval by
the Board of Governors. The expected start date is June 1, 2014.
The search committee will begin reviewing applications on September 30,
2013. It is important that we receive all application materials,
including letters of reference, at the time of application. Only
short-listed candidates will be contacted.

Applicants should send a Curriculum Vitae, statement of research vision,
samples of relevant reprints, and immediately request three confidential
letters of recommendation* from referees. Letters can be sent directly to:
