Hello everyone and happy new year!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday
season.  The purpose of this note is to communicate some of the events that
are scheduled for 2009 as well as communicate some additional items that may
be of interest to the CO/WY chapter.  This message contains the following
topics:

CURRENT SCHEDULE FOR 2009 ASA CO/WY EVENTS

##### CSU SEMINARS IN STATISTICS ##### CO/WY ASA members are invited to
attend any of the CSU Seminar Series sessions.  The CSU Seminar Series
provides an excellent opportunity to hear speakers from across the country
discuss a variety of statistical topics.  A tentative list of CSU seminar
series sessions can be found at:

Please note that the list is tentative and subject to change.  Confirmed
seminars can be found on the CSU Statistics department website
http://www.stat.colostate.edu/seminars/departmental.html usually 2-3 weeks
in advance of the seminar.  CO/WY ASA members are welcome to attend any
session (or sessions) of interest.

##### SPRING CO/WY CHAPTER MEETING (April 24, 2009) #####  Everyone is
invited to the Spring Chapter meeting to be held in Boulder, CO.  The day
will consist of speakers on a variety of statistical topics. More
information to follow. LOCATION:  NCAR - 1850 Table Mesa Dr., Boulder, CO
80305, ML-132 Main Seminar Room, 8am-5pm.  Directions - Take U.S. Highway 36
to Boulder Colorado . Exit at Table Mesa Drive . Head West on Table Mesa
Drive . The Mesa Lab and Fleischmann Building are located at 1850 Table Mesa
Drive where the road ends at the base of the Rocky Mountains

##### JOINT STATISTICAL MEETINGS ANNUAL CONFERENCE (July 2009) #####  This
year's annual conference will be held in Washington DC at the Walter E.
Washington Convention Center from August 1-6, 2009. More information to

##### FALL CO/WY CHAPTER MEETING (Date/Location TBD) ##### Everyone is
invited to the Fall Chapter meeting.  The meeting will consist of speakers
on a variety of statistical topics - more information to follow.

CALL FOR SPEAKERS FOR THE 2009 CO/WY ASA SPRING MEETING

Anyone interested in conducting a presentation at the 2009 CO/WY ASA Spring
Meeting (details above) in Boulder, CO should contact Christopher Nelson at
<mailto:chnelson at du.edu> chnelson at du.edu. Students are highly encouraged to
participate. PLEASE RESPOND BY FEBRUARY 1, 2009.

CALL FOR POSTER SESSION PARTICIPANTS FOR THE 2009 CO/WY ASA SPRING MEETING

Anyone interested in displaying a poster for a "poster session" during the
2009 ASA Spring Meeting (details above) should also contact Christopher
Nelson at  <mailto:chnelsoin at du.edu> chnelsoin at du.edu. The poster session
should include posters summarizing current or recent research which involve
quantitative methods. Students are highly encouraged to participate. PLEASE
RESPOND BY FEBRUARY 1, 2009.

CALL FOR INTEREST IN "SHORT COURSES" SPONSORED BY ASA

If you would like to participate in any of the following "ASA short
courses", please reply to Christopher Nelson at  <mailto:chnelson at du.edu>
chnelson at du.edu.  Please indicate (1) your priorities (i.e., first choice,
second choice, etc.), and (2) your preferred location (e.g, Boulder, Denver,
Ft. Collins, etc.). PLEASE RESPOND BY JANUARY 19, 2009.

The cost is estimated to be between $0 and $25 per person per course.  If
there is enough interest in any or all of these courses, I will send an
application to ASA for the CO/WY chapter to be considered as an awarded
location.  We will need at least 20 participants to be considered.

The Traveling Short Courses are provided by the ASA to bring low-cost, local
courses to Chapters.  The Traveling Course is intended as a service to
Chapters, and to assist them in providing workshops for members, and
developing programs and outreach.  The courses are awarded according to
geographical proximity to help keep the travel cost low with special
consideration given to smaller Chapters and Chapters who have not had a
course recently.   

The 2009 short courses are as follows: 

Spring - March 30 to April 2, 2009: Survival Analysis with Correlated or
Repeated Endpoints - Terry Therneau

Fall - September 14-18 or 21-25, 2009:  Bayesian Clinical Trials - Scott
Berry 

Fall - 2009: The Analysis of Cross-Classified Categorical Data - Stephen
Fienberg

CALL FOR MEMBER INITIATIVES PROPOSALS

As you may know, ASA members are invited each year to submit proposals for
initiatives that support the association's mission. In the past, ASA has
funded initiatives with wide-ranging emphases, from reaching out to the K-12
system to enhancing technological access for chapters and sections to
increasing diversity in our profession. The 2009 ASA budget again includes
funding to support these Member Initiatives. ASA hopes you will consider
participating in this activity and will think of a project that has the
potential to contribute to the advancement of the association. 

If you plan to submit a proposal, please do so no later than February 1,

CALL FOR INCREASED STUDENT MEMBERSHIP

One of my CO/WY goals for 2009 is to increase student membership and
increase student participation in the chapter.  If you know of any students
who are statistics majors or just interested in statistics, please promote
membership for the CO/WY chapter.  I would like to see 100% student
participation/membership in ASA/COWY for STAT majors in the CO/WY area - I
believe this could be possible since student membership is only $10 for ASA
and $3 for the CO/WY chapter.  Membership applications can be obtained

Any promotion and/or communication to students within Colorado and Wyoming
is greatly appreciated.
