Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the recently posted Research Topic "Pulsating Aurora: A Driver of Ozone Depletion Through Energetic Electron Precipitation" in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences.
The goal of this Research Topic is to demonstrate the feasibility and significance of using observations of pulsating aurora as a gauge for the impact of auroral activity on ozone depletion. We are soliciting submissions for:
(1) characterization of precipitating electron energy spectra, especially those with a focus on high-energy tail with data from sounding rockets, CubeSats, satellites, and/or remote sensing (space- and ground-based platforms such as interferometers, filtered cameras, incoherent scatter radars), or meta analyses of historical data or studies of the prevalence of such high energy precipitation;
(2) impacts on thermospheric chemistry including measurements (e.g., remote sensing) and modeling of odd nitrogen production;
(3) modeling of downward transport; and
(4) measurements (e.g., remote sensing) and modeling of ozone depletion.
We welcome original research, statistical studies, and meta-analyses of historical studies at any stage of the causal chain for quantifying the cascading impacts of auroral activity on ozone depletion. The final submission deadline is December 13, 2026 (submission and description here: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80038/pulsating-aurora-a-driver-of-ozone-depletion-through-energetic-election-precipitation).
This topic has been supported by a High-Impact Research Topic Award, and so a 25% Article Processing Charge (APC) waiver is available for all confirmed contributions submitted prior to the deadline. Additional APC waivers may be available for confirmed contributions as follows:
(a) 75% APC waiver for manuscripts submitted on or before June 30, 2026.
(b) 50% APC waiver for manuscripts submitted between July 1 and September 30, 2026.
We thank you in advance and look forward to the exciting research you all are doing!
Warm Regards,
Topic editors Sarah Jones, Yoshizumi Miyoshi, and Kelly Cantwell.
