Call for Abstracts: Challenges and Opportunities in the Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) Environment
American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting, Denver, CO | 2027
Abstract deadline: August 11, 2026

Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), the region just above the stratosphere, is emerging as a frontier for satellite operations, offering closer proximity to Earth and much higher revisit rates. But operating there means confronting atmospheric drag, variability in thermospheric density, and the corrosive effects of atomic oxygen. Commercial operators project dozens to hundreds of VLEO spacecraft within the next 3-5 years, making this a critical moment to bring together the research and operational communities.

This session will bring together atmospheric scientists and operators to define the state of the art in understanding and operating in VLEO, and to identify the key open challenges ahead. We're looking for talks spanning:

  *   Atmospheric drag and VLEO environment forecasting
  *   Sensors and instrumentation
  *   Materials science and spacecraft durability
  *   Propulsion
  *   Command and control
  *   Real-time data needs
  *   Lessons learned from missions to date

We especially encourage submissions from students and early-career researchers, as well as engineers, operators, and other non-academic professionals working in this space. VLEO is a genuinely interdisciplinary problem, and we want the session to reflect that - this is a great opportunity to present alongside both established researchers and the people actually flying hardware in this regime.
