The Future of Heating Science
We, the undersigned, strongly support the continued operation and pursuit of future research with the current and also future EISCAT Heating facilities near Tromsø, Norway.
The Heating facilities have contributed to novel and exceptional plasma physics research for more than 40 years and have, since its transfer to EISCAT in 1993, accounted for 20% of all EISCAT-related publications.
The EISCAT Heater uses powerful radio waves of a few MHz frequency to perturb the ionospheric plasma. Currently, there are only two other such facilities in the world, in Alaska and Russia. However, the EISCAT Heater is unique: it is the only heater co-located with incoherent scatter radars (ISR)!
ISRs can observe in detail how the ionosphere behaves before, during, and after the heating process, and are thus an essential diagnostic tool for research on wave-plasma interactions. This unique capability will soon be greatly enhanced when the new EISCAT_3D ISR becomes operational providing much higher spatial and temporal resolution. EISCAT_3D is located 50 km east of the current Heater, which facilitates a wide range of novel experiments looking into the heated region from the side allowing for observations of its horizontal structure.
Ionospheric heating is a crucial capability of EISCAT, and Heating-related research will be of particular importance when combined with the new EISCAT_3D radar. It is therefore essential to continue this ground-based space research to investigate the ionosphere and upper atmosphere.
