Dear Colleagues,
AGATA Scientific Research Programme of the Scientific Committee on
Antarctic Research (SCAR) had its successful kick-off-meeting at the end of
March 2025. AGATA (Antarctic Geospace and ATmosphere reseArch) is a
coordinated, worldwide effort to monitor, investigate and better understand
the physics of the polar atmosphere and the impact of the Sun-Earth
interactions on the polar regions. AGATA takes advantage of existing and
planned instrumentation in Antarctica, but also in the Arctic and
satellite-based observations, and aims for coordinated research efforts and
data exchange. This bi-polar perspective will allow the study of
significant interhemispheric asymmetries in the atmospheric response
observed in the polar regions. To learn more about AGATA, see:
https://scar.org/science/research-programmes/agata
AGATA is always open to new members. If you want to join the programme,
please register using the online form:
https://nettskjema.no/a/agata-registration
AGATA is currently forming its governance and is looking for candidates for
the leaders of the AGATA Working Groups which are the large overarching
groups dealing with different couplings in the atmosphere-geospace system
(Coupling between atmospheric layers, Coupling within the atmospheric
layers, Coupling to geospace), and leaders for Task Groups that will
address issues across the groups (Data Management; Scientific
Infrastructures; Scientific Campaign Coordination; Equality, Diversity,
Inclusion (EDI); Capacity Building, Training and Education; Communication,
Dissemination and Outreach). We invite the Early Career Researchers to
candidate as well! Even if you do not have much experience in leading such
groups, this is the perfect time to start, and you will not be alone!
Please send a short informal email to us with a motivation letter
explaining what your contribution to AGATA would be (even keywords will be
good!). If you were not at the kick-off-meeting and do not have the Rules
and Procedures of AGATA which specify the terms of reference for AGATA
leadership, please let us know, and we will send them to you by email (they
will soon be available on AGATA websites as well).
Please send your candidacy until the end of Thursday, April 17th your local
time and contribute to forming this exciting research programme.
With best regards,
Lucilla and Wojciech
