We invite abstracts for the AGU 2024 Fall Meeting session SA022 - The Low-Earth Orbit Environment: space weather impacts, orbital debris populations, and challenges to space operations.

The Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) environment from about 200 to 2000 km above sea level spans the ionosphere-thermosphere-mesosphere (ITM) system which exhibits high variability due to constantly changing inputs from the Sun, the magnetosphere, and the lower atmosphere. The physics of this region is extremely challenging, as interconnected but distinct plasma and neutral dynamics arises from coupling of different systems across multiple spatial and temporal scales.

LEO has recently become the focus of intense research as space traffic coordination is increasingly burdened by the proliferation of “mega-constellations” of satellites, the approach of solar maximum, and the relentless increase of orbital debris in the region.

We invite abstracts discussing recent advances and prevailing gaps in our understanding of the coupled Sun-magnetosphere-ITM system, new measurement systems and missions, the physics of satellite drag, quantifying and characterizing orbital debris populations, and operational considerations such as collision prediction and mitigation.

Please submit your abstracts by July 31st at 23:59 EDT through the AGU Fall Meeting abstract portal at https://agu.confex.com/agu/agu24/prelim.cgi/Home/0.

Thanks!
