CEDAR email: NSF/AGS Update - $160M NSF Engines opportunity

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to alert you to a new program, the NSF Regional Innovation Engines.  Please see the Dear Colleague Letter<https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2022/nsf22082/nsf22082.jsp> and the Broad Agency Announcement<https://sam.gov/opp/67236a938b4f49c5a582e6c57921e3bc/view>.  The NSF Engines Program is housed in the new Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP).  The intent of the program is to expand domestic innovation capacity through the prioritization of geographic regions that do not currently have well-established innovation ecosystems or where the innovation activities are only loosely connected.  The terminology “innovation” is broadly-defined, and a scientific area example from the FAQ document<https://sam.gov/api/prod/opps/v3/opportunities/resources/files/e88337a73e774c3e8c4854585fc08c47/download?&token=> (.pdf download) is Climate Change Resilience.  Information about upcoming webinars are available here<https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/initiatives/regional-innovation-engines/resources-and-contact-information>.  The first is Tuesday, May 17th.  There are also “regional roadshows” and office hours available to prospective PIs to learn more about the program.

AGS highly recommends that our community pays attention to, and participates in, programs that are in the new TIP directorate<https://beta.nsf.gov/tip/latest>.  It is clear from the FY22<https://nsf.gov/about/budget/fy2022/pdf/03_fy2022.pdf> and FY23<https://nsf.gov/about/budget/fy2023/pdf/03_fy2023.pdf> Budget Requests that TIP is a priority area for the agency.

Other updates:


·         The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) is holding their Quarterly Webinar<https://www.nsf.gov/events/event_summ.jsp?cntn_id=304827&org=NSF> at 2pm eastern on Thursday, May 12th.  The focus of the webinar will be on the HBCU EiR solicitation and GEO Innovation Hub activities.

·         GEO also released a new Dear Colleague Letter<https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2022/nsf22072/nsf22072.jsp> on supplemental funding opportunities for Post-Baccalaureate students who want to pursue a career in STEM but did not have access to opportunities to begin or complete a research experience as an undergraduate student due to pandemic-related interruptions.

·         AGS is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Program Director in the Aeronomy Program. The position is available either as a permanent federal employee or a temporary (rotator) appointment.
