Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Space Physics Post-Doctoral Researcher
The Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in the area of space physics. The successful candidate will join the SuperDARN Canada research team (http://superdarn.ca/) and participate in the newly created International Space Mission Training Program (http://spacemissiontraining.ca/). The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic and active research and teaching team with many international partnerships.
The PDF position is funded in part by NSERC CREATE funds for International Space Mission Training (ISM). The primary goal of the ISM program is to launch an operational student-led multi-cube satellite mission by 2025. The successful PDF candidate will engage in and support student research related to the mission development, including: space plasma physics, space weather influences on the near-Earth space environment, and instrument physics and engineering for space technology. Techniques to support the mission include multi-instrument data analysis, theoretical plasma physics, satellite communications, and/or space environment modelling relevant to a cube satellite mission. Areas of existing research strength of the SuperDARN Canada team that are relevant to the ISM are: magnetosphere and ionosphere dynamics driven by solar wind conditions, in particular using ionospheric convection measurements from SuperDARN; theoretical plasma physics of ionospheric plasma and irregularities; and radio wave propagation in the ionosphere.
Qualifications: Candidates must have successfully completed a Ph.D. in the area of space physics within the past five years. Demonstrated expertise in data analysis of large datasets is an asset. Leadership and teamwork are important assets. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to work in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment with other investigators, support personnel and students. A demonstrated ability in publication of results in the scientific literature is required as are strong written and oral communication skills.
