Postdoctoral Fellow at Tromsø Geophysical Observatory

Application deadline: 4. September 2016

Tromsø Geophysical Observatory has a Postdoctoral Fellow position vacant. The position is attached to the project "The mesospheric sodium layer as a remotely, optically pumped magnetometer for investigation of Birkeland currents".

By means of optical pumping, it is possible to use the naturally occurring sodium layer in the mesosphere to measure Earth's scalar magnetic field at ~90 km above ground. This is an altitude not accessible by other means than rockets which will provide point measurements of very short time scales. We are proposing to modify the ALOMAR sodium lidar to be able, for the first time, to measure and monitor the magnetic field in the high latitude mesosphere over longer time scales. In addition to proving a new method for monitoring Earth's magnetic field, which will attract great interest from the geomagnetic community, we will combine the efforts from different communities (astronomy, mesosphere/atmosphere, optics and geomagnetism) into a common science goal.

The successful candidate for the postdoctoral position will work on implementation of hardware upgrades to the sodium lidar at ALOMAR as well as performing measurements during the scheduled campaigns. Furthermore, the candidate will actively participate in the overall scientific activity related to the project, including publication and presentations. It is expected that the post-doc will be responsible for the project web pages and spend 2-5 % of his/her time on public outreach and dissemination activities. Working place will be in Tromsø (Norway), but frequent travel to and work at ALOMAR (Andøya) will be needed. Expected start of the position is in January 2017.

The successful candidate should have excellent engineering skills with good knowledge about and experience with optics and laser diagnostic tools such as lidars. Knowledge within space physics with emphasis on high latitude, upper atmospheric and ionospheric physics is also considered important.
