Dear Colleagues:
Please see the announcement below of a post-doctoral research position in the Remote Sensing and Space Sciences group at the University of Illinois.
Regards,
Jonathan J. Makela
Associate Professor
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
University of Illinois

Urbana, IL 61801-2307
PH: 217-265-9470
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the area of Remote Sensing and Space Sciences. The primary function of this position is algorithm development to infer ionospheric parameters from space-borne optical instruments on NASA’s Ionospheric Connections Explorer (ICON) mission.
Duties & Responsibilities:
* Develop efficient and robust algorithms and code to estimate ionospheric parameters from data provided by the Far Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (FUV) instrument on ICON;
* Develop efficient and robust algorithms and code to estimate thermospheric parameters from data provided by the Michelson Interferometer for Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) instrument on ICON;
* Conduct analyses demonstrating ability of developed algorithms and code to produce inferred data products that meet mission requirements;
* Exercise simulations of the developed algorithms for scientific analyses based on the anticipated measurements;
* Participate in ICON science working group meetings;
This position requires a Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. The successful candidate should possess experience in data analysis and scientific computing and have knowledge of the radiative processes in the Earth’s ionosphere and thermosphere. Knowledge of optical sensing systems (especially interferometric and spectroscopic) used in observing the ionosphere/thermosphere and scientific software development with modern programming languages (especially Python, MATLAB, and C) is desired.
This is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment with applicable University benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is grant funded and subject to the yearly reappointment process. Possibility of extending the appointment is contingent upon availability of funds.
Consideration of applicants will begin on August 18, 2014, and will continue until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, please send your curriculum vitae or resume, cover letter, and the names, email addresses and phone numbers of three professional references to Prof. Jonathan Makela (jmakela at illinois.edu<mailto:jmakela at illinois.edu>) and Prof. Farzad Kamalabadi (farzadk at illinois.edu<mailto:farzadk at illinois.edu>).
