The CEDAR Science Steering Committee solicits workshop session proposals
for the June 24-28 meeting in Boulder, CO DUE FRIDAY MARCH 1
via the workshop proposal form

on-line]. This is not a
hard deadline, but we really encourage conveners to get their proposals
in by the end of the following week (by Friday March 8) so the CSSC
can organize the workshop sessions.

These sessions should support the goals of the NSF CEDAR program and the
theme of the 2013 meeting, which is to identify and address the grand
challenges in the science disciplines that fall into the CEDAR domain.

Sessions should address the science priorities in the field of aeronomy
and space physics for the upcoming decade described by the recent Decadal
Survey for Solar and Space Physics from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS)
(see http://sites.nationalacademies.org/ssb/currentprojects/ssb_056864 and the 
[[media:NAS_2012_Decadal_Brief_Report.pdf | NAS Report in Brief]] and also the 
[[media:Decadal_CSSC_Briefing_v2.pdf | 2013-2022 Decadal Briefing to the CSSC]]) 
. Sessions should identify a particular science challenge and outline an approach
to meet it. Successful sessions will address 1) how the associated questions
will be addressed, 2) what resources exist, are planned, or are needed, and
3) how progress should be measured. The justification for the sessions should
also relate to the 2011 (not 2010 as previously stated and

The ionosonde have been the work horse of ionospheric research for many decades.
 From the discovery of the ionospheric layers and their diurnal and seasonal 
variations to ionospheric dynamics and spread F, ionosondes have provided the 
basic measurements.
Over time the ionosonde itself underwent a steady development from a relatively 
simple analog instrument to a highly sophisticated digital radar system, and the 
initial ground-based observations extended to satellite borne topside 
observations. We solicit papers on significant ionospheric research with 
ionosondes from ground and satellites and on the development of ionospheric 
sounders.

It is planned to publish selected papers in a special issue of the open access 
journal “History of Geo- and Space Sciences” (Copernicus Publications).
