(1) NSF Solicits Feedback on the Planning Document (April 2013) of the Geospace
Sciences and the budget outlook for 2014-2026.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Rich Behnke (rbehnke at nsf.gov)

The NSF Geospace Sciences Planning Document from April 2013 and the
"waterfall" budget outlook for 2014-2026 is linked on the main CEDAR
community wiki at http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu and under "Community".
Specific URLs are

http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/images/9/9f/NSF_GS_Plan_June_2013.pdf

and http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/images/5/5d/NSO_GS_Budget_Plan_2014-2026.pdf

The budget is what is needed to implement the plan, but the money is not
assured. The basic sections of the planning document are:

I) Overarching Goals:
(A.) Fundamental Scientific Understanding and
(B.) Linking Science with Societal Needs

II) Approaches
(A.) Observations
(B.) Modelling
(C.) Capacity Building

III) GS Strategic Priorities
(A.) Basic Research Priorities
(B.) Advanced Facilities and Instrumentation Priorities
(C.) Integrated and Coupled Models Priorities
(D.) Effective Education and Training Priorities
(E.) Strengthening the Geospace Section

IV) Relation to Solar and Space Physics Decadal Survey -
A new, integrated, multiagency initiative (DRIVE — Diversify, Realize,
Integrate, Venture, Educate)
(A.) Diversify Observing Platforms with Microsatellites and Mid-Scale
Ground-Based Assets
(B.) Realize Scientific Potential by Sufficiently Funding Operations and
Data Analysis
(C.) Integrate Observing Platforms and Strengthen Ties between Agency
Disciplines
(D.) Venture Forward with Science Centers and Instrument Technology Development
(E.) Educate, Empower and Inspire the next Generation of Space Researchers

V) Conclusion

Please send your comments to Rich Behnke at rbehnke at nsf.gov on the NSF Geospace
Sciences planning document and on the needed (but not certain) budget outlook
for 2014-2026.
