Papers are invited for a special issue of the Journal of Advances in Space
Research that will focus on ionospheric modelling studies related to the
International Reference Ionosphere (IRI). The core set of papers will be
from the 2013 IRI Workshop in Olsztyn, Poland that had as its main topic
the use of GNSS data for the improvement and evaluation of IRI.  Papers
on all topics related to ionospheric modelling in the context of the IRI
project are welcome including comparisons with new data sources, and  global,
regional, and local improvements and applications of the IRI model. Of special
interest are papers on assimilating and updating the IRI model with real-time
measurements from the ground and from space. The issue editors are Bodo Reinisch
and Dieter Bilitza. The submission site is http://ees.elsevier.com/jasr/
(Advances in Space Research). Please select "IRI and GNSS" in the special issue
drop-down. The hard deadline for submission is February 20, 2014. Papers will be
published electronically as soon as they are accepted. The printed issue will be
assembled within a reasonable time with late papers being printed in regular
issues of ASR.

(2) 2014 CCMC Student Research Contest Announcement.

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center and the National Science Foundation
are pleased to announce the third annual CCMC Student Research Contest.

Undergraduate and graduate students who are using (or have recently used)
CCMC tools and services in a research project or as a part of coursework
are invited to enter the contest. Any students who participated in the first
or second contest and are still involved in space research - we encourage
you to submit a report on your new work.

Winners will be invited to present their work at the 2014 CEDAR, GEM, and
SHINE workshops. New this year - the winner of the new Space Weather category
will be invited to attend the Space Weather Workshop in Boulder, CO
(http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/sww/).

(3) Jicamarca International Research Experience Program - JIREP 2014 -

The students will work with staff engineers and scientists on projects
related to ongoing research or instrumentation development programs.
Research may be conducted in neutral atmospheric and ionospheric science
as well as radar/radio instrumentation and software development. Given its
location, frequency of operation, and array system, most JRO's research
capabilities are unique. Besides the unique research capabilities where
students are welcomed to propose and run their own experiments, JRO offers
a good opportunity to get hands-on-experience on different aspects of radar
systems, from changing the antenna connections, improving RF components
of the system, to develop sophisticated acquisition and processing programs.

A side benefit of the program is that students will get to know Peru,
heir to ancient cultures and rich colonial tradition. This program is
offered to junior/senior undergraduate and/or first and second year graduate
students and will cover the travel expenses (to and from Lima), as well as a
reasonable stipend. Given that the Observatory is located outside Lima city,
transportation will be provided.

* Duration: 10 weeks

First announcement

The tenth Latin American Conference on Space Geophysics (X COLAGE) will be
held in Cuzco, Peru on September 8-12, 2014. This conference, organized by
the ALAGE (Latin American Association of Space Geophysics), gathers scientists
and students interested in the following areas of research: middle and
high-altitude atmosphere; the ionosphere; the magnetosphere; the interplanetary
medium; cosmic rays; the planets, satellites, minor planets and other bodies;
the sun and solar-terrestrial interactions.

X COLAGE will be followed by the International School on Space Science, which
is sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP)
and the International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI). This school will take
place in Lima, Peru on September 15-24, 2014. The school will be an excellent
learning and enrichment opportunity for students that also attend the X COLAGE.
