From Dawn Williams (dawnw at ucar.edu).

UCAR’s COSMIC program is providing an opportunity for senior-level undergraduate
and graduate students who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents to
attend and participate in a special "student session" of the Taiwan-hosted Fifth
FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC Data Users Workshop, to be held in Taipei, Taiwan April 13-15,
2011. This meeting will be in conjunction with the International Conference on
GPS Radio Occultation. The trip will include a student session, site visits to
Taiwan's National Space Organization and Taiwanese universities, sightseeing in
Taipei, and a local overnight trip (location to be determined).

FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC is a joint Taiwan/U.S. science mission for weather, climate,
space weather and geodetic research. The mission, launched in 2006, deployed six
identical micro-satellites and currently provides up to 2,000 daily radio
occultation profiles in the neutral atmosphere, electron density profiles and
total electron content arcs in the ionosphere, GPS scintillation observations,
and TIP radiance products.

From Hanli Liu (liuh at ucar.edu).

The CESM Tutorial workshop is a week of lectures on simulating the climate
system using the Community Earth System Model. The present version of this
model contains the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) up to 140 km
used for mesosphere and lower thermosphere studies. There are practical
sessions on running CESM, modifying components, and analyzing data. Materials
including on-line videos from the WACCM workshop at the 2010 CEDAR Workshop are
located at http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/Workshop:CEDAR_Videos
under the 2010 talks.

The CESM Tutorial workshop is targeted at the graduate student level. maximum of
80 students are welcome, with financial support for up to 40 students. The
acceptance criteria are:
<br>Preference is given to early career graduate students, though we will aim
for a mix of graduate students, postdocs, and early career research scientists
and faculty.
<br>Project descriptions and their fit with the broader CESM goals and activities
<br>A balance of attendees across institutions

Application procedure:
<br>Apply online at http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/. The application will be online
in early January, 2011.
<br>Application deadline: 25 March 2011
<br>Accepted students will be informed by late April

Call for Presentations on Data Assimilation and Ensemble Forecasting at the IUGG
2011 General Assembly, Melbourne, Australia, 28 June - 7 July 2011. Registration
is now open and abstracts are due by 1 February 2011. The main websit is at

Joint Symposia J-M02: "Data assimilation and ensemble forecasting for weather
and climate"

Scope: The session will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of the
latest research in data assimilation and ensemble forecasting. The effectiveness
of data assimilation and ensemble forecasting is inextricably linked to our
ability to estimate the distribution of truth given limited information. Given
imperfect and sparse observations together with an imperfect forecasting system,
data assimilation focuses on estimating the distribution of current and past
states while ensemble forecasting strives for the distribution of future states.
Data assimilation schemes need an estimate of the distribution of truth given a
short term forecast – a key objective of ensemble forecasting. The intertwining
of the aims of data assimilation and ensemble forecasting makes it likely that
data assimilation experts can help ensemble forecasting experts and vice-versa.
We are calling for presentations of outstanding research in data assimilation
and ensemble forecasting. Particular data assimilation topics include:
* Advanced assimilation methods, including hybrid variational and ensemble-based
approaches, weak constraint 4D-VAR and model error estimation;
* Improved use of observations: observing system experiments and observing
system simulation experiments, adaptive observing methods, calculation of
observation sensitivities;
* Assimilation of data from new satellite instruments, such as COSMIC, CloudSat,
IASI, SMOS, Aquarius and ADM-Aeolus;
* Space Weather, including applications to the heliosphere, the magnetosphere,
and the ionosphere-thermosphere system;
* Polar assimilation: exploiting the considerable data collected during the IPY
and subsequently via the Arctic Observing Network.

Contributions on ensemble forecasting for short, medium, seasonal and climate
time scales are all welcome. Specific sub-topics include:
* improved methods for initializing ensemble forecasts,
* estimation and representation of model error, and
* ensemble post-processing to optimize the value of probabilistic forecasts to
decision makers.

Keywords: observations, satellite data, advanced methods, decision makers

Review: All contributed abstracts will be reviewed by the conveners

Options: Accepted abstracts will be presented as either oral or posters as
determined by the conveners.

(5) 22-26 August, 2011, 38th Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by
Optical Methods, Siuntio, Finland.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Noora Partamies (noora.partamie at fmi.fi).

38th Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods
will be organised jointly by the Arctic Research group of the Finnish
Meteorological Institute, the University of Oulu Space Research Group and
Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, at Siuntio Wellness and Conference Resort,
Finland, 22-26 August 2011.

<b>Meeting description</b>
<br>Optical methods have been used for studies of the atmosphere for centuries.
A wealth of information about the whole atmosphere, from the troposphere to the
thermosphere, can be obtained by active or passive optical measurements. Recent
technological developments have also opened up a panorama of new possibilities
for high-resolution measurements and measurements coordinated with other types
of instruments.

The Annual European Meetings on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods bring
together scientists from Europe as well as from other parts of the world to
exchange experience, share scientific results, and plan and coordinate future
experiments.

<b>Intercalibration workshop</b>
<br>Intercalibration of light standards will also again take place during this
meeting. Thus participants can bring their own light sources to calibrate.
