The generation of noise over steep terrain (slopes greater than 30 degrees) at horizontal resolutions finer than 1 km is a well-known problem of terrain-following sigma-p coordinates.

The authors have developed an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) for WRF that overcomes these problems to simulate flow over steep complex terrain, such as urban landscapes.
