I believe this is an area of interest that the NASA Short-term 
Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center is investigating as 
well.  Dr. Gary Jedlovec (gary.jedlovec at nasa.gov), who I have cc'd on 
this note, would probably be a good person to contact.
