Position #1:  ** Exciting Opportunity to Be a Key Team Member -- Climate
Change Communications at U.S. EPA **

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Change Division (CCD)
is seeking the capable assistance of a motivated and energetic
individual interested in working on one of the most critical
environmental issues of the day.

This exciting internship will include some or all of the following
responsibilities:

- Work closely with CCD's Communications Director to formulate and
implement a range of internal and external communications strategies
- Write clear, concise synopses of timely issues relating to climate
change, as well as drafts of public information materials
- Respond to press inquiries in coordination with management and staff
- Consult directly with management and staff to identify and pursue
opportunities for climate change outreach (e.g., press releases, trade
press articles, conference participation, etc.) relating to CCD's
voluntary, scientific, policy, international, and analytical programs
- Coordinate and/or initiate expansion of relationships with a range of
climate-change stakeholders

The ideal candidate would have the following skills or qualities:

- Superior communications skills, both written and oral
- An eagerness to work collegially with staff at all levels, but also
take on independent tasks and projects
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the details of climate
change policy, programs, and/or science, both domestic and international
- Ability to coordinate high-level and timely information materials for
staff and senior management in a fast-paced environment
- Superior organizational abilities, as well as experience in or ability
to learn to use spreadsheets and/or other computer software
- An outgoing and pleasant personality, facilitating the flow of
information

Position #2:  ** International Methane to Markets Partnership Intern
Position **

The Environmental Protection Agency is the lead agency for the U.S.
government on the Methane to Markets Partnership, an international
initiative designed to promote cost-effective, near-term methane
recovery and use projects.  The Methane to Markets Partnership targets
four major methane sources: agriculture, landfills, underground coal
mines, and natural gas and oil systems.  By promoting methane recovery
and use projects, the Partnership will increase energy security, enhance
economic growth, improve environmental quality, and reduce greenhouse
gas emissions throughout the world.
Project Description

The intern will train with the Methane to Markets team within EPA’s
Climate Change Division.  The intern will have the opportunity to learn
about climate change and related issues, and participate substantively
in a variety of challenging and rewarding projects.  Typical projects
will include:

- Facilitating communication and outreach activities among partners and
the public;
- Developing of fact sheets and web site content about the Partnership
- Revising and updating the methanetomarkets.org and EPA methane web
sites
- Preparing materials and planning for agency, inter-agency, and
international meetings
- Developing and implementing a new on-line tracking system for Methane
to Markets activities and projects
- Educating key stakeholders about the Partnership
- Coordinating Methane to Markets activities and events
- Communicating with international Partners on a variety of issues
related to climate change and methane programs
- Helping to market the M2M program to stakeholders at a climate-related
conference or meeting (domestic or international)

The associate will have the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of
the U.S. national voluntary methane programs and the international
Methane to Markets Partnership Program.  This internship will provide
the opportunity to make contacts with both national and international
environmental and industry professionals, enhance research and writing
skills, and increase knowledge of voluntary federal programs on climate
change.  The small size of the Secretariat ensures that the intern will
play an important role and will be exposed to a variety of different
tasks and learning opportunities.

Additional Background

As the lead agency for the Methane to Markets Partnership, EPA
coordinates extensively with other involved agencies including the
Department of State, Department of Energy, U.S. Trade and Development
Agency, and U.S. Agency for International Development.  The EPA
currently hosts the M2M Secretariat.  The Secretariat is responsible for
facilitating communication among members, planning M2M Subcommittee and
Steering Committee meetings, and developing outreach and communication
materials for the Partnership.  The M2M Secretariat is housed in the
Climate Change Division, Office of Atmospheric Programs/Office of Air
and Radiation.  Countries that have joined the Partnership include:
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany,
India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine, United
Kingdom, and the United States.

Qualifications:   Candidates should be either undergraduate or graduate
students majoring in environmental policy, environmental science, public
affairs, or related subjects, have excellent verbal and written
communication skills, and a strong interest in the environment and/or
climate change.  Ideal candidates will be highly motivated; able to
manage and prioritize multiple tasks; able to work independently and in
a collegial team environment.  An understanding of environmental policy
making and government, and the ability to speak a foreign language are
desirable.
