Dear Colleague,

We're writing to tell you about two student training programs and to ask
your assistance in assessing the need for – and interest in – technical
short courses designed for individuals working at the interface of the
Atmospheric and Biospheric sciences.

*1. DOCTORAL STUDENT TRAINING PROGRAM - FUNDING FOR UP TO 2 YEARS!!*

The Biosphere-Atmosphere Research and Training (BART) Program is an
NSF-IGERT training program for doctoral students who are conducting research
at the interface of these disciplines. Students enrolled in any doctoral
program in the United States (U. S. citizens or permanent residents) can win
a fellowship for up to two years. Fellowships include an annual stipend
($30,000), up to $2,000 for equipment or supplies, and support for travel to
the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) and to a professional
conference. BART fellows participate in an 8-week residential training
program at the UMBS in Pellston, MI for 2 summers and continue in their
doctoral program during the academic year. Summer training includes a
course in the essentials of Biosphere-Atmosphere interactions, workshops,
and research conducted with the guidance of faculty mentors with expertise
in biospheric and atmospheric sciences.

*Please visit the BART web page at www.bart-wmich.org to learn more about
the program and to obtain application information. Applications are due in
February 2006. Please feel free to contact the BART Coordinator, Nancy
Adair Birk, toll-free at 888-647-0536.*

*2. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT TRAINING PROGRAM - FUNDING FOR SUMMER RESEARCH*

The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) Research Experience for
Undergraduates (REU) in Biosphere-Atmosphere studies in a changing global
environment provides "hands-on" experience and training in field biology,
atmospheric chemistry, and atmosphere-ecosystem interactions. Successful
applicants, who will be juniors or seniors in fall 2006 (U.S. citizens or
permanent residents) work closely with a faculty mentor to conduct a
research project. Students receive a stipend of $3,500 for the 8-week
program, in addition to coverage of room/board expenses and an allowance for
travel and research supplies. In addition, students may receive 3 credit
hours for an independent study project. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE SOON!! -- To
learn more about this program, please visit
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs/and select the "Forms and Applications"
tab.
Or please feel free to contact Karie Slavik at (734) 647-1952.

*3. PLEASE COMPLETE QUESTIONNAIRE ON NEW TECHNICAL SHORT COURSES BY
December 10th.*

The Biosphere Atmosphere Research and Training (BART) Program is in the
process of developing new technical short courses for upper-level graduate
students, postdocs, and working scientists. Your input will help us assess
the need for / interest in technical short courses for scientists working at
the interface of the Atmospheric and Biospheric sciences and will help us
make these courses as useful as possible. Please take our short survey (15
MINUTES) and share you thoughts by clicking on this link:

Please encourage your doctoral students to apply for a BART Fellowship and
your undergraduates to apply to participate in our REU program. Please
forward this message to your students and colleagues and encourage them to
complete the questionnaire.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!!
