Description for the Director of Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology (MMM)

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), in Boulder, Colorado,
is currently seeking applications for the Director of the Mesoscale and
Microscale Meteorology (MMM) Division. The MMM Division is dedicated to
advancing the understanding of mesoscale and microscale aspects of weather
and climate. The MMM program includes theoretical, modeling, interpretive,
and observational research and supports two main scientific themes: the
Prediction of Precipitating Weather Systems and the Cloud and Surface
Processes and Parameterizations [www.mmm.ucar.edu/science.html].

The Director of NCAR's MMM Division is expected to play an important
leadership role in mesoscale and microscale meteorology, both nationally
and internationally. These specific responsibilities include a leading role
in the design and execution of NCAR-led field projects; the development and
adaptation of world class mesoscale models for the research community and
the transfer of such models to the operational community; and the provision
of expertise in mesoscale meteorology to other NCAR strategic efforts such
as research on global climate.

NCAR has recently developed a forward-looking strategic plan that requires
its divisions to be proactive on numerous scientific fronts. The MMM
director will play a crucial and dynamic role in developing and
incorporating significant tactical and strategic decisions to merge the MMM
science and program plans with the NCAR strategy. The NCAR-wide strategy
stresses interdisciplinary challenges (e.g., water cycles, data
assimilation, climate and weather assessment science, biogeosciences,
etc.), new approaches to university support, and community leadership
(e.g., community models and field activities.) NCAR also strives to
expand education and outreach, to develop a harmonious interaction between
research and operations, and to build persisting intellectual and physical
infrastructures for the research community.

The next leader of MMM will have to step up to these challenges and work
cooperatively and collaboratively with many external and internal
stakeholders. The new director will be a member of the executive committee
for NCAR and will have a shared responsibility for NCAR's future directions
as a national center. The MMM director will advocate the scientific values
of the division, as well as develop and disseminate a shared vision for the
broader atmospheric and related sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities of Director

Responsible for the overall scientific productivity, creativity, and
excellence of the division including the formulation and execution of both
long and short-range plans.

Enhances the quality of the scientific and support staff through
exceptional management of personnel and the recruitment of high caliber
individuals, supporting organizational diversity initiatives including
affirmative action goals.

Plans and manages budgets and other resources, and develops new funding
sources to support the scientific goals of the division.

Develops and oversees interactions and collaborations with other NCAR and
UOP divisions and programs. Serves as program advocate in a number of
forums, including government agencies, UCAR member institutions, and the
scientific community at large.

Qualifications

International recognition as a scientific leader in atmospheric science
preferably in areas of relevance to MMM research.

PhD. in an appropriate physical science, or the equivalent combination of
education and experience.

Skill in scientific advocacy to effectively and persuasively promote goals
and strategies for the advancement of MMM programs with NCAR, UCAR, funding
agencies and the general scientific community.

Demonstrated scientific acumen and leadership skills associated with the
development of scientific programs.

Demonstrated leadership skills in directing and developing a staff of
widely-varying backgrounds and experience.

Demonstrated skills in budget and resource development and related
management/administrative functions.

Skill in identifying problems or potential problems, and in recommending,
promoting and implementing effective and creative solutions.

Apply via the web at: www.fin.ucar.edu/hr/careers. Please include cover
letter and resume, reference Position #4016. Initial consideration will be
given to applications received prior to Friday, December 12, 2003.
Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.
