[ncl-install] v6.4.0 with non-OPeNDAP

Hi Mary,

Thanks for this – upgrading Cygwin has solved the problem.

For info, if anyone else reading this has the same issue, you must delete the duplicate binaries from v6.3.0 to make sure that the v6.4.0 ones are used.

Many thanks for your help,
Helen

Hi Helen,

Usually when you type "ncl" and nothing happens, this is because there's a compatibility issue between the NCL binary you're running, and the system you are on.

Has it been awhile since you updated Cygwin? NCL V6.4.0 was built under whatever the latest version of Cygwin was around January/February 2017. If your Cygwin is older than this, then this could be the source of the problem.

What I recommend is updating Cygwin.

  * Exit out of your current Cygwin window.
  *   Go to http://x.cygwin.com/
  *   Download the setup-x86.exe file (NOT setup-x86_64.exe)
  *   Run setup-x86.exe.

Hopefully you should be able to accept all the defaults, UNLESS when you originally installed Cygwin, you didn't use the defaults. In that case, you'll want to use the same answers that you used before.

As you run this program, you may notice that it detects some of your packages are out of date, and it will indicate what new version it's going to install. This is what you want.
  * Once you finish answering all the setup questions, it should then start updating all the software that it found was out of date.

  * Once this finishes, try running cygwin like you normally do, and trying your NCL command again.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the explanation, that’s helpful.

I have one other issue. I’ve unpacked the code from the tarball into my $NCAR_ROOT, but I’m still finding that when I type ncl at the prompt, it goes to version 6.3.0. On closer inspection the new (6.4.0) binaries all have the *.exe extension. So I now have an ‘ncl’ and an ‘ncl.exe’ in my $NCAR_ROOT/bin/ (one from each version I assume).

I tried deleting the ‘ncl’, and running ncl.exe, but nothing happened. I also tried removing all the old binaries and only having the new ones, but again nothing happens when I type ncl at the command prompt. It doesn’t throw an error either which is odd – nothing at all happens.

Am I missing a step? I have $NCAR_ROOT/bin added to my $PATH, so it should be able to see it.

Best,
Helen

Hi Helen,

We don't have a non-OPeNDAP version of NCL for Cygwin, and it won't hurt if you use the OPeNDAP version. With NCL version 6.3.0, we didn't provide a non-opendap version either, so you are likely using an OPeNDAP-enabled version already.

The OPeNDAP-enabled version of NCL allows you to use "addfile" to access data files on the web that are served by OPeNDAP servers. The reason we provide different versions of NCL is because the OPeNDAP version requires additional software be installed on your system, which some users find to be a pain.

Since you are likely already running an OPeNDAP version of NCL on Cygwin, this means you already have the additional software needed, so you should be good to go.

Hi,

I’m upgrading from 6.3.0 to 6.4.0, but I can’t find the precompiled binaries for Cygwin at the non-OPeNDAP-enabled page here: https://www.earthsystemgrid.org/dataset/ncl.640.nodap/file.html

Or in the direct link under downloads here (gives 404 error): https://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Download/windows_cygwin.shtml

I honestly can’t remember which one (opendap or non-opendap) I have installed already – what’s the difference? Does it matter if I use opendap??

Best,
Helen
