you're right, Michael.  so i did restart successfully using the 2562  
element grid (thanks, Mark) running test case 2.  so i guess it is  
likely that the issues are in dealing with the ocean grid.  i guess  
maybe i should try a double-gyre quad grid to see if that works, to  
test if it is a hex vs quad issue (which seems very unlikely)?
