Dear Postdocs,



Dr. Meg Urry of Yale University will give a special talk, open to all, on
Thursday, Jan. 21, at 3 pm in the JILA Auditorium.  (JILA Tower, ground
floor at the end connecting to Duane). Dr. Urry is President of the
American Astronomical Society, former chair of the Yale Astronomy
Department, and a national leader advocating for women in academia. Dr.
Urry’s talk is titled, “Challenges and Benefits of Equity and Inclusion
for Academic Success.”

She will review  current statistics in physics and astronomy; discuss
research showing that current admissions and hiring practices are
discriminatory and poorly correlated with measures of excellence; and
address the recent harassment scandals in astronomy.

Dr. Urry is on campus to speak at the premiere of “Vera Rubin: Bringing the
Dark to Light,” a joint production of Fiske Planetarium and the Boulder
Ensemble Theater Company. As a young women Vera Rubin was one of the first
to discover that our universe is filled with dark matter.  The play is
unique in using video on the Fiske dome as the set of the play.
