This June, NCAR is hosting a one-week Undergraduate Leadership Workshop, an
immersion experience intended to help college students explore careers and
get exposure to research in the atmospheric sciences. I am looking for
scientists to mentor students for about two hours during that second week
of June.

It is a small time commitment that will likely have a big impact on a
student, and would be an education and outreach contribution to the NCAR
community. The time involved would be as follows:

*1. Monday, June 8th, 12 - 1 pm at ML*: Meet your student at a catered
lunch.
and
*2. Either*
* (a) Tues., June 9th  9:30 - 11 a.m.  at ML*
  OR
* (b) Wed., June 10th  9:30 - 11 a.m. at FL or CG *
depending on your office location:

The goal is to connect students with scientists, programmers, or engineers
to help them learn about careers in these fields. During the Tues/Wed.
session, students would visit you at your workspace, possibly in pairs.
They would ask you questions about your work, visit your lab, and see
visual plots, posters, or instruments of interest. They will videotape the
interview and your facilities/instruments, and use it to create a small
composite with other students’ videos.

During other parts of the week, students will be meeting Jim Hurrell, Tom
Bogdan, Tom Windham, hearing talks, visiting RAF, doing field trips, cohort
building, and getting professional development training. We will have 19
students who were nominated by their department at schools across the
country.

If you would like to be a mentor for this short time, please contact me! In
the past, time with the mentors was rated the most highly of all of the
events, and so you can be sure that it is worthwhile. I know that you
have insight and wisdom to share with these students, and it will be a lot
of fun!
