Dear all,

To kick off next week's Thompson Lecture Series, we will have a
get-to-know-you session with Prof. Shadia Habbal from 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM in
the Damon Room at ML on Tuesday, Nov. 15th. She will be introduced to
everyone and we will engage in a career discussion with her.

I am collecting questions that you might have regarding how to advance your
career, how to weather challenges along the way, etc. Here is a bit more
about Prof. Habbal that might be interesting fodder for career/work-life
balance questions:

+ In 2004, Prof. Habbal was nominated for an Asian Women of Achievement
Award.

+ Her early efforts at leading an eclipse expedition to India in 1995 have
led to the establishment of a small international group of ”solar wind
sherpas,” as she has nicknamed her group, with a record number of
discoveries from observations of five eclipses between 2001 and 2010.
"Solar wind sherpas" have had expeditions to Mongolia (1997), Guadaloupe
(1998), Syria (1999), Zambia (2001), South Africa (2003), Libya (2006),
China (2008), the Marshall Islands (2009), and French Polynesia (2010).

Her full CV can be found at http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/users/shadia/. Be
sure to let me know whatever career-related questions come to your mind!

Thanks,
Vanessa
