 *Seminar Summary*:

Dr. Kathy Barker, author of two books on leadership and management in
scientific research, will discuss why- and why don't - scientists speak out
on controversial subjects, or get involved with their community beyond the
bench. She will discuss the varied opportunities for scientists and
engineers to maintain their careers while pursuing responsible civic
activites, strategies for effective communication, and the perceptions that
can place limitations on researchers' activism.

 *Dr. Kathy Barker - A brief biography.*

Dr. Barker received her B.A. in Biology and English from the University of
Massachusetts/Boston and her M.S. in Microbiology from the University of
Massachusetts/Amherst. She did her Ph.D. work in Microbiology at the
University of Massachusetts Medical Center and her postdoc at Rockefeller
University in the Laboratory of Viral Oncology with Saburo Hanafusa.

Dr. Barker was an assistant professor at Rockefeller in the Laboratory of
Cell Physiology and Immunology when she left the lab to write her first
book, *At the Bench: A Laboratory Navigator*. She continues to write and
give lectures and workshops to address the critical but often unsaid issues
that are the foundation of scientific success and happiness.
