[Go-essp-tech] TAMIP2 project name

Hi Jamie,

I've moved this thread to go-essp-tech for more general consultation.

I have had virtually no guidance on how to manage the metadata for TAMIP(2) and therefore had to make a decision on the project name. IIRC I named it "TAMIP2" because the page at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/tamip/data_download.html called the project TAMIP2. However that page is now only available in Google's Cache! (Google TAMIP2) and there seems no online information about it. I have also seen it referred to as TAMIP phase II.

So in hindsight maybe I made the wrong choice. We can change the name displayed in the Gateways very easily but it should be done in coordination and with the authority of someone who can speak for the project. Do you know who that would be?

Thanks,
Stephen.

Hello Stephen,

Sorry, this may seem a small thing, but I'm not convinced that putting TAMIP2 is the right thing to do. The MIP tables for TAMIP (see http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/tamip/data_req_submit.html) call the project TAMIP (not TAMIP2). This means

1. all the NetCDF meta data from CMOR say TAMIP
2. DRS uses TAMIP

so why have two names for one thing in the same system? I think you are better keeping internal consistency (even if its wrong) and leave users to deal with it. They have to anyway, unless you are proposing to modify all the netcdf attributes (triggering a new version!) and move all the files, and update all the catalog records (sorry, this last bit wasn't that helpful - I just let my imagination run away with me).

If you have two names for the same thing in the system you just have an extra mapping of this term to maintain... and my forecast is its going to catch up with you sometime and confuse you (look at project=cmip5 vs project = IPCC...)

Jamie

Could all CMIP5 gateways ensure they are harvesting TAMIP2 records from BADC and DKRZ. We have been asked to ensure TAMIP2 is visible along side CMIP5 throughout the federation.

We also have a naming problem again. some places have "tamip" and some "TAMIP2". It should be the latter. I have this fixed in our database but my plan is not to fix the facet search until we next have maintenance downtime (unless someone can tell me how to fix the tripplestore without wiping it)

There is query on the helpdesk about this (See Issue 242).

Thanks,
Stephen.
