DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE

POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:   Inclusion Fellow

DURATION: 6-9 Months

SALARY: $25/hr

FLSA:  Non-Exempt

DIVISION/SITE:  Headquarters, Washington DC

DEPARTMENT:  Operations / Human Resources

REPORTS TO:  VP of People and Culture

Basic Summary:
The Diversity Joint Venture for Conservation Careers (DJV) is a partnership of federal and state agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, foundations, and professional societies that work together to increase the number of women and people of color in the conservation workforce.  Positions in the field of conservation preserve and protect natural resources.  Such jobs emphasize the sciences but also include research, management, policy, and interpretative expertise.  One of the DJV's objectives is to support inclusive work environments in the conservation workforce.   To address this objective, the DJV's Inclusion Working Group will compile a list of best practices, case studies, and metrics to promote inclusion in conservation organizations.  This research will result in a toolkit that outlines steps and resources for organizations to become more inclusive.  The toolkit and all other collected documents will be available to the public via the DJV website.
Position Function: An Inclusion Intern will support the DJV by (1) developing a framework for the toolkit based on input from the Inclusion Working Group; and (2) conducting research to find best practices, articles, examples and metrics for each piece of the toolkit.  Time and resources permitting in a second phase of the effort, the intern will assist a consultant(s) to (a) provide a version of the full toolkit to the working group for review and comment; (b) draft a revised version for review by the DJV; (c) finalize and submit for design; (d) assist the working group and communication team in developing the online version of the toolkit; and (e) help to launch toolkit on the DJV website.
The Inclusion Intern will become a temporary employee of Defenders of Wildlife (Defenders) and be housed in their Human Resources Department under the guidance of the Vice President for People and Culture. The timeframe for the effort is between six and nine months.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  *   In collaboration with the Inclusion Working Group, determine categories of information to collect, including best practices, case studies and toolkits (e.g., recruitment, cultural assessments, professional development, management training, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) training)
  *   Identity and Compile Best Practices
     *   Based on the categories of information collected (e.g., recruitment, cultural assessments, professional development, management training, DEIJ training)
     *   Based on how the Inclusion Working Group defines a "best practice"
     *   Conduct research and gather documents, materials, and resources on inclusive work environments
     *   Determine dissemination strategy for sharing resources
  *   Compile or Develop Case Studies
     *   Identify existing case studies on organizations creating inclusive work environments
     *   If necessary, create new case studies
     *   Determine dissemination strategy for sharing case studies
  *   Compile or Develop Metrics
     *   Compile existing metrics and surveys on inclusive work environments (e.g., federal employee viewpoint survey)
     *   Refine metrics
     *   Develop survey tool for DJV members (and others) to begin collecting data
     *   Determine process for collecting data from organizations and reporting our progress
  *   DEIJ Work Specific to Defenders
     *   Work with the Vice President for People and Culture to refine Defenders' DEIJ plan, attend and shadow meetings, and use Defenders as a test lab for the implementation of the toolkit.

Qualifications:
Education:

  *   Current Graduate Level Student pursuing a degree in Industrial Organization Psychology, Organization Management, or relevant fields to communications, human resources, or conservation

Experience:

  *   Demonstrated experience in the preparation of professional presentations, fact sheets, website content, and other communication materials.

Skills:

  *   Excellent oral and writing communication skills.
  *   Ability to work well, and be flexible in, a team-oriented environment.
  *   A strong attention to detail.
  *   Ability to understand and interpret diversity in the conservation workforce.
  *   Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities concurrently.

Work Expectations:
Work Environment:
General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.
