About the position

A two-year postdoctoral fellowship/researcher position (with a possibility for extension) is available for the research topic “Assessment of climate change impacts on marine biogeochemistry using Earth system models” at the biogeochemistry group of NORCE Climate and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. NORCE Climate conducts basic and applied research on the climate system, on anthropogenic climate change and its impact on societies, and on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options. NORCE Climate is one of the four partners of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, which is the largest climate research centre in the Scandinavian countries and among the leading centres in Europe. Our biogeochemistry group works on quantifying the global cycles of carbon and related elements, on better constraining future projections of these cycles, and on sustainable mitigation options.

We offer an exciting job-opportunity in the field of marine biogeochemistry and Earth system modelling. You will analyze the ensemble of CMIP5/6 Earth system models with the aim to evaluate these models based on observable quantities. The final goal is to constrain future projections of the CMIP ensemble to support climate change risk assessments (e.g. future IPCC assessments). This is an exciting and challenging area of science, and we are looking for a motivated, curiosity-driven person, preferably with experience in analyzing Earth system model projections. You will have the opportunity to utilize “big data” approaches and collaborate with experts in this field.

The position is funded through the EU H2020 project COMFORT and the Norwegian Research Council project COLUMBIA. Although the position is formally announced as a Postdoc position, we also encourage more senior researchers to apply. We will try to make an attractive offer based on your experience. You will be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, and you will work in a lively and international research environment.

Your work tasks

  * Develop and apply evaluation methods for CMIP5/6 ESMs based on observable quantities related to ocean carbon and heat uptake, oxygen content, pH, primary production.
  * Develop skill metrics to constrain future projections of CMIP5/6 ESMs based on this evaluation.
  * Perform and analyze model simulations of mitigation scenarios with the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM)
  * Publish results in high level peer reviewed journals

Your education

A PhD within oceanography, meteorology, physics, mathematics, biology or related fields is required.

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  * A strong background in marine biogeochemistry and Earth system modelling, and knowledge of Earth system dynamics in general
  * Skills in handling, analysing, and visualizing large model data sets
  * Experience in working with Linux/Unix environments and with high level programming languages (e.g. FORTRAN, Matlab, R, Python)
  * Experience with running ocean biogeochemical models and/or Earth system models
  * Ability to work across disciplines
  * Good team working skills while being proactive
  * Proficiency in both written and oral English

We can offer

  * A good and professionally challenging working environment
  *   A competitive salary
  *   Excellent welfare benefits
  * Opportunities for independent project development
  * Possibility to influence your own work, work-time and choice of solutions

Your application must include

  * A brief account of your research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  * The names and contact information of two references
  * CV including a list of scientific publications
  * Transcripts, diplomas and relevant certificates
  * If a PhD has not yet been awarded: An official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted
  * The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at our recruitment portal Jobbnorge
