Position Summary:

The Department of Geomatics at the University of Alaska Anchorage invites
applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in Geomatics. The primary
duty of this position is full-time teaching in the ABET-accredited
four-year degree Bachelor of Science in Geomatics, in the two-year
Associate of Applied Science, as well as in Minor in GIS. Courses may
include, but are not limited to, undergraduate Geomatics courses, including
the fundamentals of surveying, advanced surveying, GPS, GIS, geodesy,
mapping and map projections, boundary law, adjustment theory and practice,
hydrographic surveying, geomatics computations, computer-aided drafting.
The position may include a research component depending on the background
of the successful applicant.



Duties:

The primary duty of this position is full-time teaching in the
ABET-accredited four-year degree Bachelor of Science in Geomatics, in the
two-year Associate of Applied Science, as well as in Minor in GIS. Courses
may include, but are not limited to, undergraduate Geomatics courses,
including the fundamentals of surveying, advanced surveying, GPS, GIS,
geodesy, mapping and map projections, boundary law, adjustment theory and
practice, hydrographic surveying, geomatics computations, computer-aided
drafting. Other duties include, but are not limited to community service
(including university, community and professional); continuing the ABET
accreditation process and other assessment activities; advising students;
developing outreach programs to the larger community; assisting with
curriculum development and with program and faculty growth and development;
writing and managing grants; publishing the results of research in academic
journals; participation on committees within the Department of Geomatics,
the College of Engineering and the University; and working cooperatively
with faculty and staff in the Department and the College of Engineering.
The successful candidate may also be asked to chair the Department of
Geomatics at some future date (on a rotational basis) while teaching within
the Department. Responsibilities as Chair include, but are not limited to:
budgetary planning and control; personnel selection; ABET accreditation
preparation; curriculum oversight and planning; coordinating with the
Geomatics Advisory Board; representing the Department and its concerns both
internally and externally.



The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is the largest of three
universities in the University of Alaska system, serving nearly 20,000
students. Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, with an ethnically diverse
population of 290,000, offers a lively intellectual and cultural life,

Within the University of Alaska Anchorage's College of Engineering, the BS
Geomatics Program is accredited by Applied Science Accreditation Commission
of ABET, Inc. The department offers a comprehensive set of surveying,
mapping, photogrammetry, geodesy, GPS, LiDAR, Remote Sensing, and GIS
courses. Faculty in the program range from practicing land surveyors to
researchers involved in a wide variety of geospatial, engineering, and
natural resource studies. The Department strongly promotes respectful
working environment and collegiality.

The Department of Geomatics invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track
Assistant/Associate Professor position in Geomatics. The position is open
to either surveying practitioners with extensive documented professional
experience or applicants with strong research experience in Geomatics. The
primary duty of this position is full-time teaching in the Geomatics
department in the ABET accredited four-year Bachelor of Science degree in
Geomatics, as well as for the two-year Associate of Applied Science in
Geomatics, and Minor in GIS.

If the successful applicant is hired based on extensive surveying
experience, they must possess a valid Professional Surveyor License and
will be required to obtain registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in
Alaska during the first four years of employment. If the successful
applicant is hired based on research experience, they will be required to
carry out scientific research in the area of incumbent’s expertise as well
as participate in the Department, College, and University research projects.



The appointment is expected to begin in August 2019. Applicants must be
legally authorized for unrestricted employment in the United States.

*Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position*

The successful candidate must have demonstrated recent successful teaching
experience in Geomatics, or potential for successful teaching at the
University level, as well as excellent demonstrated English language
communication skills both oral and written.

The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively and
collegially with faculty, staff, students and members of the wider
community from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.



*Typical education or training required for this position (including
licenses).*

The successful candidate must hold an undergraduate degree in Surveying,
Geomatics or closely related area. A completed M.S. is preferred for
surveying practitioners with extensive documented experience; all other
applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent research doctorate (ABD for
research doctorate degree is accepted at the time of application. Completed
and confirmed Ph.D. is required at the time of hire). The graduate degree
must be in Geomatics, Surveying, or a closely related area.

Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting the
academic credentials required for the position as a condition of
employment. Qualifying earned degrees must be conferred either by
institutions of higher education which are accredited by one of the six US
regional accrediting associations or by an equivalent international
institution of higher education as determined by UAA based on a review by a
foreign educational credential evaluation service and recognized by UAA.



*Length of time and type of experience required for this position.*

Criteria, specific to the type of applicant’s background, are outlined
below.

Surveying practitioners: minimum seven years of progressive and varying
successful professional work in private industry or government;
Professional Land Surveyor licensure or Professional Certificate in
Photogrammetry, GIS, or Geomatics-related areas.

Applicants with research background: a proven record of funded research and
publications in peer-reviewed journals in Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial
Science, or closely related areas.



*Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities for this position.*

Preference will be given to candidates who show evidence of:

- Demonstrated substantial expertise in one or more of the following areas:
land surveying, surveying-grade GPS, geodesy, spatial data adjustment,
geo-computations, cadastral surveying, boundary law, and hydrographic
surveying;

- Demonstrated professional growth and development;

- Demonstrated record of presentations at professional and technical
conferences;

- Demonstrated record of instruction given at professional and technical
workshops, professional development courses, etc.;

- Knowledge of Alaska's physical and cultural issues, as well as its unique
patchwork of land resources, issues, law, jurisdictions, statutes, and
policies;

- A background in and/or understanding of ABET accreditation;

- Experience in outreach to K-12 students and teachers.

Additional preferences specific to the type of applicant’s background are
outlined below.

Surveying practitioners:

- Earned M.S. Degree or equivalent in a Geomatics related discipline;

- Professional licensure or certification as a Professional Land Surveyor
in Alaska;

- Field experience surveying in the US PLSS in Alaska or elsewhere.

Applicants with research background:

- Professional field or office experience with land or hydrographic
surveying data collection and processing (in industry or government);

- Demonstrated record of publications in peer-reviewed journals in
Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Science, or closely related areas;

- Proven record in obtaining research grants in Surveying, Geomatics,
Geospatial Science, and related areas (from university, industry, agencies,
and national foundations);

- Demonstrated success in managing research teams (including graduate and
undergraduate students).
