Attributing trends in air pollution extremes under a changing climate

Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University, UK

Primary Supervisors: Dr Ryan Hossaini and Dr Paul Young

Synopsis: Poor air quality is a global health concern affecting virtually all nations and all of society. It is characterised by harmful levels of tropospheric ozone, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter (e.g. PM2.5), for which evidence links acute and chronic exposure to increased morbidity. Since the 1990s, the distribution of anthropogenic pollutant emissions (e.g. from transport, industry, agriculture etc.) has markedly shifted from Europe and North America to Asia – where rapid economic expansion has occurred. The goal of this PhD project is to quantify global and regional pollutant trends under a changing climate, with a focus on (a) understanding and attributing extreme pollution events (including their frequency and duration) and (b) determining source-receptor relationships – e.g. how have Asian emissions affected European air quality over the last decade; how will climate change influence trans-continental pollutant transport?

To accomplish the above, you will be trained to use state-of-the-art global atmospheric models and in the application of cutting-edge data science techniques. The successful candidate will acquire valuable transferable skills in programming, data analysis and scientific presentation.

Lancaster University was named the Times/Sunday Times University of the Year in 2018. We are one of the UK’s leading universities, securing a top ten position in the three major UK leagues tables nationally in 2019. Studentship Funding: Full studentships (UK/EU tuition fees and stipend (£15,009 2019/20 [tax free])) for UK/EU students for 3.5 years. Unfortunately, funding is not available for International (non-EU) students.

Academic Requirements: We are looking for a self-motivated candidate with an interest in atmospheric science/air pollution/climate. Applicants should hold a minimum of a UK Honours degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Natural or Environmental Science, or a related discipline. This project is well suited towards candidates with an interest in scientific computing.

Deadline for applications: 29th March 2019

Start Date: October 2019
