PhD position in crop production adaptation to climate change, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala

We are looking for highly motivated candidates interested in exploring long-term meteorological and yield data, to identify the most promising cropping strategies in the face of increasingly variable conditions.

Extreme weather conditions, such as those that hit Northern Europe in summer 2018, are expected to become more common with climate change. They threaten food security by reducing crop yields and increasing their year-to-year variability. We thus need to know how we should grow our crops to reduce risks of weather-induced yield losses. To this aim, the PhD-student is expected to collate and analyze long-term meteorological and yield data drawn from differently managed cropping systems, to identify the most promising cropping strategies and their applicability by farmers.

The position will be associated with the project "Cropping options to buffer climatic extremes for high and stable yields". The successful candidate will join a world leading team in the field, with researchers at SLU, Uppsala University, and the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science, working in the areas of plant ecophysiology, hydrology, agronomy and agroecology.

The required qualification for the position is at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. The higher education credits can be in ecology, engineering, earth and environmental sciences, hydrology, statistics, applied mathematics, agronomy, or related fields. Written and oral proficiency in English is required. Previous experience in collation and analysis of data and working knowledge of R, MatLab, Python, C, or other programming languages for data analysis and model implementation are merits.
