Additional Information


Purpose

To participate in the planning and delivery of academic advising and
counseling services and programs that promote comprehensive educational
opportunities for students.

Essential Functions

Responsible for understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic
options in a specific area of study as well as in other degree program
options throughout the University in order to facilitate students academic
goals and pursuit of a 4-year degree. Interpret, develop, and implement
policies and programs affecting a specific student population. Assess
programs and policies from the perspective of an academic advisor as well as
on behalf of the students. Provide historical data in addition to
observations and experiences to support requests. Advise students
individually and in groups about the development of an educational plan,
related options, progress towards degree completion, and utilization of
University and School resources available. Maintain confidentiality. Works
closely with other academic advisors and counselors in order to provide
timely information on course and degree options, undergraduate programmatic
opportunities, and university policies. Employ a proactive approach to the
identification of and timely action in matters such as: proposed changes
that would negatively affect student academic progress, noted trends in
student requests or behavior, and student needs not addressed by existing
programs or resources. Coordinate with appropriate offices as needed.
Establish and maintain a comprehensive support network for geosciences
undergraduates that addresses academic and life skills development; Utilize
available technology and resources to facilitate accurate documentation and
communication of pertinent details relating to students academic career
within the Schools student services office and the broader University
advising community. Responsible for working across constituencies to forge
practical solutions to complex problems; for accumulating and disseminating
academic information; and for interacting with faculty, students, and
parents in the coordination of academic advising functions. Organize and
present at School and University events involving recruitment, admissions,
and new student orientation. Serve on University, school and professional
organization committees upon request.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other related functions as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must
provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of
residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's
License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of experience working
with college students in an academic counseling capacity or Master's degree
in a related field and two years of experience in counseling, group work,
assessment and administration of student academic programs. Experienced
problem-solving skills, quick learner, self-motivated, comfortable with
change, and a high capacity for working with others to provide a range of
services in a fast-paced office. Equivalent combination of relevant
education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with college-level programs providing academic advising
and counseling in the STEM fields, particularly geosciences. Knowledgeable
of UT Austin undergraduate academic advising, programs, policies and
procedures.

Working conditions

May work around standard office conditions Repetitive use of a keyboard at a
workstation Use of manual dexterity General office conditions with the
majority of time spent in contact with students, parents and student groups
during usual office hours. Some evening and weekend work.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under
consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas
(TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length.
