What You Will Do:
The Climate, Ocean, and Sea Ice Modeling team seeks a postdoc to work on the
development and application of a Greenland ice sheet model component within
the U.S. Department of Energy's new Energy Exascale Earth System Model
(E3SM, https://e3sm.org/). The work will use E3SM's ice sheet component, the
mature MPAS-Albany Land Ice (MALI) modeling framework
(https://www.geosci-model-dev.net/11/3747/2018/gmd-11-3747-2018.html), which
is also being applied to sea level projections from Antarctica. Work will
focus on the development of MALI applied to Greenland and its coupling
within E3SM (including surface mass balance calculated within E3SM's land
model component). Additionally, the position may include analysis and
publication on both stand-alone and coupled ice sheet simulations,
application of new optimization and initialization methods, and the
application of new model physics (e.g. subglacial hydrology and iceberg
calving). The long-term goal for the position will be projections of sea
level change from the Greenland Ice Sheet calculated within the coupled E3SM
Earth system model and analysis of ice sheet interactions with other
components of the climate system. We expect that the successful candidate
will help to define specific science goals that are compatible with these
broader requirements.

What You Need:
Minimum Job Requirements:
* Knowledge of computational ice sheet and/or climate modeling;
* Expertise in shell scripting and/or data-analysis languages (e.g. Python,
Matlab, bash);
* The ability to work in a highly collaborative team setting.

Desired Skills:
* Experience in construction and application of ice sheet and/or climate
models;
* Experience in high-latitude, coupled climate modeling and analysis;
* Expertise in computer programming in languages compatible with
high-performance computing (e.g. Fortran90, C, C++);
* He/she will have also demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by
submission and publication of authored publications in refereed journals,
the ability to create or improve numerical models, and the ability to
analyze and interpret ice sheet and/or climate model simulation data.

Keywords: ice sheets, ice sheet modeling, climate, climate modeling, global
climate models, high-latitude climate dynamics, climate model coupling,
sea-level change

Education: A Ph.D. in geophysical-fluid modeling, climate modeling, physical
glaciology, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field.

Notes to Applicants: In addition to applying through the LANL jobs system,
please send a curriculum vitae, digitized copies of transcripts, names of
three references, and a cover letter detailing qualifications and research
interests to Matthew Hoffman at mhoffman at lanl.gov <mailto:mhoffman at lanl.gov>
. Please include "E3SM Greenland Postdoc" in the email subject line.
Applications will be reviewed as received with the intent of filling the
position winter of 2018 and a start date soon after.

Additional Details:
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to
complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy
that includes random drug testing.
Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and
outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P.
Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick
Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.
