• Based in Wellington, New Zealand
• Fixed-term (3 years), full-time

NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science.

NIWA has an excellent history of atmospheric greenhouse gas and isotope measurements and modelling. This is linked to a wider effort to improve knowledge of human impacts on the environment both globally and in the South Pacific region in order to guide and verify national and international strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas impacts on the climate system. A new programme has just been launched to address crucial carbon cycle science questions in the three landscapes that are most important to NZ's carbon balance: forest, grassland and urban environments.

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to undertake national scale atmospheric CO2 inverse modelling and investigate relationships between climate drivers and terrestrial CO2 uptake in New Zealand. The appointee will work with Lagrangian models, atmospheric measurements of CO2 from an expanding national network of stations and output from terrestrial models. There is also potentially scope to for the post doc to assist with the interpretation of new isotopic measurements, working alongside measurements experts on atmospheric trace gases.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD or equivalent experience in atmospheric science or a related field. They require strong analytical, statistical, and programming skills and the ability and aptitude to network with other New Zealand experts on the carbon cycle. A background or interest in inverse modelling, Lagrangian modelling or in situ and/or remote-sensing trace gas measurements is also desirable.

As an engaging team player, you will enjoy working with collaborators in New Zealand and overseas, communicating positively with a wide range of staff. You will have initiative, be results-oriented and well organized. You will have good writing skills including technical reporting, documentation, and research publications. You will enjoy living in one of the most liveable, highly rated capital cities of the world, starting as soon as possible.

The role will be supervised by Sara Mikaloff Fletcher (Sara.Mikaloff-Fletcher at niwa.co.nz).
