The Institute for Watershed Studies exists to support research on freshwater lakes, streams and wetlands. Affiliated with Huxley College, the Institute provides support to all Western faculty and students with an interest in watershed problems. The Institute is a state-certified analytical facility. It provides training and supervision for student lab and field experiences; assists with program development; sponsors educational seminars and guest lectures; collaborates with local governmental and non-governmental organizations; and brings state-of-the-art equipment and knowledge to bear on a number of significant local and regional water quality issues. The Institute embraces an integrated approach to watershed studies, and to this end, it brings together students and faculty from traditional science backgrounds with those from a variety of other disciplines, such as policy, education, and journalism. To foster dissemination of information to entities outside the University, the Institute maintains an online database of water quality data from over 50 lakes throughout Northwest Washington and a high-quality image database of algae images for scientific study. About the Position
The Department of Environmental Sciences within Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University invites applications from candidates for the Director of the Institute for Watershed Studies. This is a full-time, tenured faculty position at the associate or full professor rank, beginning in September 2019. We seek an individual with interests in watershed studies and limnology, particularly the ecological dynamics of lakes in human-affected landscapes and the management of adverse impacts to water quality. The responsibilities of the position are divided between a 12-month, 50% academic administrative position as an institute director and a 9-month, 50% academic position as a departmental faculty member.
The position requires a strong commitment to accomplish the mission of the Institute and to meet the responsibilities to the department in a strongly teaching-oriented environment. The successful candidate will direct long-standing research and monitoring collaborations and develop new ones. The principle collaboration has been with the City of Bellingham on Lake Whatcom. The lake serves as the drinking water supply for the city and this monitoring project is the most significant commitment of the Institute's activities by engaging staff, students, and scientists in and beyond the University. As a faculty member, teaching responsibilities will be equivalent to one-half of a typical full teaching load in the department and may include upper division and graduate level classes in areas such as such as freshwater ecology, water quality, environmental sampling and analysis, statistical analysis, and research and writing. Faculty members also advise master's students and serve on graduate student committees.
We seek candidates who are committed to a multidisciplinary approach to scholarship and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all undergraduate and graduate students. Criteria for promotion are described in the Department of Environmental Sciences and the Huxley College Unit Evaluation Plans (https://huxley.wwu.edu/faculty-staff-resources). This position is represented by the United Faculty of Western Washington through a Collective Bargaining Agreement (https://www.ufww.org/).
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to: 1) develop, sustain, and direct an externally funded research and monitoring program; 2) manage a professional staff to accomplish watershed research, monitoring, and management goals; 3) partner and communicate effectively with university colleagues, agency professionals, elected officials, consulting firms, and the public; 4) mentor undergraduate and graduate students through engagement in both laboratory and fieldwork. Responsibilities of this position as a faculty member in the department include teaching, research, and service within and outside the University.
* PhD in limnology or a related field
