The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) gathered data and samples
of many different types during a three-month research expedition. The
"Delivering Added-value to Antarctica" (ACE-DATA) project will generate new
interdisciplinary knowledge about the Southern Ocean and create a platform
through which the ACE data will be made publicly available. The focus of
the project will be on air-sea interactions and will deal specifically with
a sub-set of these datasets collected during the expedition. ACE-DATA is a
joint project between the Swiss Polar Institute, the Swiss Data Science
Center, the Paul Scherrer Institute and other ACE project members
worldwide. ASAID will investigate ocean-atmosphere interactions from ocean
physics, chemistry and productivity, meteorological variables and
atmospheric gases and aerosols, based on in situ measurements, satellite
observations and modeling results.

For the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition DATA project in the Aerosol
Physics Group we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow*Atmospheric Science / Oceanography*Your tasksThe
successful applicant will be working on the ACE-DATA project. The main
tasks include leading the ‘Antarctic Sea-Atmosphere Interactions Data’
(ASAID) sub-project and supporting the set-up of the ACE Database in
coordination with the respective work package leaders. Different
international research groups are involved with their datasets and
scientific support in this sub-project. This will require high level
coordination and communication skills of the candidate. Your main task
involves collecting and harmonizing data from a number of ACE projects
involved in ASAID; testing the functioning of the platform as coordinated
by the data manager; develop the research questions and analyze the large
ACE datasets using advanced statistical and programming tools in
collaboration with project partners and the Swiss Data Science Centre;
organize teleconferences and workshops to discuss data with the project
partners; publish the results and assist with publication of the datasets.
Your profile

   - PhD in atmospheric science, oceanography, earth system science or
similar, or alternatively data science combined with a background in earth
   system science
   - Handling large data sets of diverse nature and in various formats
   - Good programming skills (e.g. Python) and demonstrable programming
   experience
   - Project management and communication skills
   - Experience in the application of advanced statistical methods on large
datasets, and experience with SQL and Linux are an advantage
   - High proficiency in spoken and written English
