3 PhD Opportunities: Environmental Data Science, Lancaster University, UK
October 2018 start

Lancaster University is advertising three fully-funded PhD positions in the Centre of Excellence in Environmental Data Science, a joint venture between Lancaster University<http://lancaster.ac.uk/dsi> and the NERC Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH)<https://www.ceh.ac.uk/>.

Very brief description of the projects below, along with the deadlines. Please see here<https://bit.ly/2DL7fVr> for full information, contacts and an application form.

PROJECTS
1: Spatio-temporal modelling of extreme temperature events on the Greenland ice sheet
Predict the size and likelihood-of-occurrence of high temperature events which are even more extreme than those already observed in the data set, using methodology from several branches of statistics, but primarily from extreme value analysis.

2: Projecting future global-to-local air quality and climate with data science approaches
Develop new methods that provide future projections of air quality at impact- and policy-relevant spatial scales, using models, observations and a range of novel statistical techniques.

3: Integrating agent-based land use models and macro models for improved environmental decision-making
Develop agent-based simulation technologies for predicting land-use, using new machine learning techniques and real world data to automatically tune the models of land-users, and to continually refine/improve simulations as new land-use data arrives.

DETAILS
Funding: Full studentships for 3.5 years (fees plus maintenance grant of £14,553pa tax free) for those who count as Home or EU students for the purposes of fees. Unfortunately non-UK/EU applicants would need to provide funding to cover the difference between home and oversees fee rates.

Academic Requirements: First-class or 2.1 (Hons) degree, or Masters degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject.

Deadline for applications: 1:00pm Friday 16 February 2018

Provisional Interview Date: Friday 2 March 2018

Start Date: October 2018

Application process: Please send an application form<http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/media/lancaster-university/content-assets/documents/lec/pg/LEC_Funded_PhD_Application-Form.docx>, CV and undergraduate transcript, along with two references by email to David Leslie (d.leslie at lancaster.ac.uk<mailto:d.leslie at lancaster.ac.uk>), who is overall director of the project.

Please pass the reference form<http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/media/lancaster-university/content-assets/documents/lec/pg/LEC_Funded_PhD_Reference_Form.docx> to your two referees in plenty of time and ask them to send their completed reference direct to David Leslie. Due to the limited time between the closing date and the interview date, it is essential that you ensure references are submitted by the closing date.
