Position Title: Ph.D. Student in Civil and Environmental Engineering, UC Davis
Start date: Fall quarter 2018 {earlier or later start dates could be arranged}.

Description: I am looking for an enthusiastic, talented and creative Ph.D. student to join my research group and investigate fundamental and applied atmospheric turbulent transport and land-water-atmosphere interactions over complex, mountainous terrain.  This position combines ambitious field studies with theory and modeling techniques to research how turbulence in the atmosphere transports heat, water, momentum and pollutants.  Potential research applications include meteorological and hydrological forecasting, quantifying greenhouse gas exchange/emissions, and water and air quality.  The position has funding/tuition support, for which the duration and amount depend on the student’s background and level of experience.  Any continuation of financial support is contingent upon the student’s satisfactory academic and research progress, and the availability of external funding.

Minimum Requirements

  *   Bachelor of Science degree (completed prior to start date) in engineering, physics, atmospheric science, mathematics or related field.  Students with a Master of Science (MS or MSc) degree may be given prioritized consideration.
  *   Computational proficiency (coding in one of MATLAB, Python, R, Fortran, C, C++, etc)
  *   Proficiency using MS Word, LaTex or other typesetting and formatting software tools.
  *   Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  *   A solid academic record in mathematics and physics.
  *   Competency in working with standard household tools and hardware.
  *   Ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team.
  *   Ability to work outdoors under a variety weather or climatic conditions.
  *   A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  *   Experience in authoring/co-authoring scientific publications.
  *   Experience presenting scientific findings at conferences.
  *   Degree(s) in engineering fields.
  *   A solid academic record in courses pertaining to atmospheric turbulence, fluid dynamics and/or thermodynamics.
  *   Basic electronics skills.
  *   Fieldwork experience.
