The Associate Dean of General Education, Integrated Learning, and
High-Impact Practices (HIPs) reports to and assists the Associate Provost
of Learning Advancement. The Associate Dean is responsible to improve the
quality and coherence of the SLCC’s General Education program, and to
promote integrative, high-impact learning throughout SLCC’s academic
programs. The Associate Dean is administratively responsible for SLCC’s
General Studies and Integrated Studies A.S. programs, its General Education
Certificate of Completion, and the assessments thereof. This position is
at-will.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Directing the general education activities of the College by working with
deans and faculty to ensure students will be served by a coherent and
excellent General Education program. Serving as a voting member of the
General Education Committee—with agenda-setting rights—and as SLCC’s
official member of USHE’s General Education Taskforce. Making decisions on
General Education substitutions and waivers.
Working with faculty and administrators to design an Integrated Studies
A.S. program and administrating it thereafter.
Promoting High-Impact Practices (HIPs other than ePortfolio,
service-learning, study abroad, and FYE—which already have stewards) in
collaboration with Faculty Development, the FYE Office, the ePortfolio
Office, and the Office of Engaged Learning. Connecting SLCC with
state/national organizations and initiatives pertaining to General
Education and High-Impact Practices, with an aim to bringing national
best-practices to SLCC.
Working with Faculty Development to plan and implement New Faculty
Orientation.
Teaching one Gen Ed course per year as part of their administrative load,
modeling HIPs.
Providing leadership for student academic honor societies.
Serving on search committees for faculty in various departments who will be
hired to teach primarily Gen Ed courses.
Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience with and understanding of general education in a
regionally accredited college or university.
• Three years of full-time, successful, higher education administrative
experience.
Minimum Qualifications

• Earned Master’s degree in a discipline represented in SLCC’s General
Education program.
• Four years of successful full-time teaching experience in general
education at a regionally accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated innovative and flexible leadership/management style that is
organized, creative, proactive, sensitive to the perspectives of others,
and motivational.
• Ability to collaborate with others—to organize and lead teams of people
of diverse backgrounds to accomplish goals, with special sensitivity to the
importance of collaborative relationships with faculty, administrators, and
staff.
• Knowledge of and experience with general education course design and
teaching, as well as general education program design within Utah and
national contexts.
• Understanding of and experience with HIPs in higher education.
• Ability to lead instructional programs within a changing environment.
• Knowledge of fiscal management and purchasing in higher education, and
ability to manage resources within financial constraints, and collaborate
with Business Services through appropriate procedures.
• Knowledge of learning resources, computer systems, advanced learning
technologies, concurrent enrollment, distance learning, and other delivery
modalities and teaching/ learning methodologies, and ability to promote
effective teaching and learning within instructional programs.
• Knowledge of and support for a comprehensive community college philosophy
and the impact of community colleges on students’ lives.
• Ability to solve problems effectively through sound decision-making.
• Commitment to equal opportunity and diversity.
• Written and verbal communication skills suitable for presentations,
proposals, and national publications.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people
to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic setting, including
students, faculty, and staff from different socioeconomic, cultural and
ethnic backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
