Opportunity for Graduate Research in Atmosphere-Ocean Interaction: Air-Sea CO2 Exchange Measurements from Mobile Platforms

Overview
The Atmospheric Sciences Research Center and the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Science at the State University of New York at Albany are pleased to announce an opening for a highly-motivated PhD student to make state-of-the-art measurements of air-sea CO2 exchange from mobile platforms as part of a collaborative project with the University of New Hampshire funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The scientific objective is to improve the understanding of processes controlling air-sea gas exchange.
Project Description
Turbulent air-sea fluxes of carbon dioxide will be measured using the eddy covariance technique from a discus buoy. The project involves analysis and testing of sensors in the laboratory, the UNH deep dive tank, and deployment for field trials in the Gulf of Maine. The successful student will process and analyze data using Matlab, Python, or similar software, present results at scientific conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Motivated students with an interest in geophysical fluid mechanics, turbulence, and air-sea CO2 exchange are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications Desired
•	BS or MS degree in physical sciences (atmospheric sciences, oceanography, engineering or a related discipline)
•	Willingness to travel and go to sea
•	Some experience with field observations, data acquisition and processing is beneficial
Application Procedure
Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Scott Miller (smiller at albany.edu <mailto:smiller at albany.edu>) by email before applying. Information on the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the University at Albany with links to the application process can be found at http://www.albany.edu/atmos/indexmain.php.
Important Dates
The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. Note, if admitted into the department for Fall 2018, the student may begin working in the lab before then.
Application Deadline: The deadline for applying to the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at SUNY Albany for admission for Fall semester 2018 is January 15, 2018.
