Job Description and Duties
California Air Resources Board (ARB) Research Division is inviting applications from qualified air quality and climate researchers with extensive experience in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions modeling and data analysis for an Air Pollution Specialist position within the Emission and Exposure Research Section. The candidate will join a team of highly trained air quality and climate researchers who are responsible for conducting and managing a variety of extensive in-house, collaborated, and extra-mural research studies on air quality and GHG emissions in California.
The selected candidate will be responsible for applying scientific methods and principles to advance the agency's understanding of GHG emission sources, and initiate and conduct independent research studies to verify the GHG emissions inventory through source-based emissions research, and analysis of data from source apportionment and modeling studies. Candidate must have proven record of accomplishment in conducting complex geospatial and statistical data analysis for large-scale projects like satellite and airborne remote sensing applications, ambient monitoring networks, mobile and source level flux measurements, and major field studies. The position requires collaboration with a variety of program staff both within and outside the agency, and the candidate will require strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences effectively.
The candidate will also participate in a new research team tasked with building and implementing a statewide emissions modeling system for GHG emissions in California. The position will require detailed emissions modeling skills to evaluate, quantify, and understand emission signature of statewide methane and nitrous oxide emission sources in the State. Candidates must have broad knowledge of forward and inverse modeling techniques, and have prior experience in advanced atmospheric models such as WRF, STILT, LES, CMAQ, etc.
The selected candidate will also get opportunities to participate in large-scale experimental field studies using state-of-the-art measurement and analysis tools. The Section routinely participates in important in-house and collaborated research field studies including the California Statewide Methane Survey, flux estimation studies for point and area sources, personal exposure studies, and motor vehicle and transportation source emissions research studies. Some travel may be required.

The candidate must be a detail-oriented and self-motivated individual with the ability to analyze technical data, develop solutions and present technical information in a clear, concise, and logically organized manner, and have the ability to summarize complex technical results for upper management and policy makers.
Expertise in large data management and analysis, as well as advanced air quality and GHG emissions modeling (forward and inverse modeling, large eddy simulations) are essential. Experience in air quality and GHG emissions measurements are desirable. Candidates must have a general understanding of GHG emission sources, as well as their emission characteristics and distribution in California.
Critical thinking skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to set and meet deadlines are essential for this job. The candidate must be a team player with a positive attitude, dedication, and a desire to make original and sustained contributions to the ARB.
