The George Mason University Sid and Reva Dewberry Department of Civil, Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, is seeking two highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellows to conduct research in the fields of hydrology, remote sensing and data assimilation. The candidates will be involved with the NASA-sponsored project titled “HMA-LDAS: Hyper-Resolution High Mountain Asia – Land Data Assimilation System.” This project proposes to study surface flux, snow/ice storage, and water balance changes in the High Mountain Asia (HMA) region; and investigate the causality of these changes at the regional to local scale. Specifically, a hyper-resolution 1km2 HMA-Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS) 1980-current terrestrial reanalysis will be developed using the Community Land Model and the Community Ice System Model; forced by physically downscaled surface meteorology; parameterized by remotely sensed topography and vegetation; and constrained by remotely sensed snow, temperature and snow/ice observations. 

This position will assist the supervisors in the interpretation and publication of results, exercise functional supervision over supporting graduate students, and contribute to scientific publications. As part of the postdoctoral experience, the incumbents will receive mentoring for developing research proposals, and participation in career development activities will be strongly encouraged. 

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in one of the following disciplines: civil/environmental/water resources engineering, atmospheric science, hydrology, geography, physics, or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate an academic record of scientific excellence, independent research and a strong interest in interdisciplinary studies. Strong modeling and programming skills are essential. This position requires individuals who are able to successfully work in a team environment. The successful candidates should be passionate and committed; have strong analytical and communication skills; possess excellent Fortran programming skills; and have a background in land surface modeling, hydrology and data assimilation.
