Subject: Postdoctoral Fellow in Ecosystem Modeling, Boise State University

Position Summary
Professors Alejandro (Lejo) Flores and Nancy Glenn in the Geosciences=20
Department at Boise State University, are seeking a qualified and=20
enthusiastic scientist-colleague for a postdoctoral position in dynamic=20=

ecosystem modeling of sagebrush-steppe ecosystems. The position is=20
funded through grants from the NASA Terrestrial Ecology and EPSCoR=20
programs and the Joint Fire Science Program.=20

Core activities of this postdoctoral position include:=20
(1)=09Using existing field, lidar, and hyperspectral datasets at a=20
number of study areas in the Great Basin of the Western US to=20
parameterize, initialize, calibrate, and verify the Ecosystem Demography=20=

(ED) model, and=20
(2)=09Parameterizing and exploring the impacts of fire mitigation=20
strategies (e.g., mowing, green strips) on the long-term distribution,=20=

abundance, and coexistence of grasses, forbs, and shrubs in these=20
ecosystems.

The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively with and=20
benefit from the expertise of a number of research scientists, postdocs,=20=

and graduate students with expertise in land modeling, remote sensing of=20=

terrestrial ecosystems and hydrology, and land management and=20
restoration ecology. These potential colleagues are currently housed=20
within the Lab for Ecohydrology and Alternative Futuring (LEAF), the=20
Boise Center Aerospace Laboratory (BCAL), and the USGS Forest and=20
Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC).

Co-advisors Glenn and Flores are enthusiastic about and committed to=20
providing mentorship and training to support the professional=20
development of the successful candidate. We particularly welcome=20
applications from colleagues interested in leveraging the science=20
products developed during the postdoc to advance their independent=20
research agenda and pursue collaborative research in collaboration with=20=

the research advisors.=20

Minimum Qualifications
=95=09PhD in Earth System Science, Ecology, Applied Math, Physics or=20
related disciplines=20
=95=09Strong quantitative background and experience in modeling and=20
statistics
=95=09Demonstrated ability to design, conduct, and publish research=20
related to ecosystem modeling
=95=09Excellent written and oral communication skills
=95=09Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills necessary=20
for working in a multidisciplinary research team
=95=09Programming experience

Preferred Qualifications
=95=09Experience with ED or other vegetation dynamics or land models
=95=09Experience with lidar and hyperspectral remote sensing=20
=95=09Expertise with scientific programming languages for data=20
analysis such as MATLAB, Python, or R

Application
Applications are now being accepted and the position will close when=20
filled. The position is a yearly appointment with potential funding and=20=

renewal for up to 2-3 years. Applicants should send as one compiled=20
document: 1) CV; 2) one-page statement of research interests; 3) up to=20=

three publications and 4) contact information for three references.=20
Please send materials to BOTH Lejo Flores (lejoflores at boisestate.edu)=20
AND Nancy Glenn, nancyglenn at boisestate.edu.=20
