Postdoc Opportunity: The Science of Climate and Environmental Change

South University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTech)

Shenzhen, China

School of Environmental Science and Engineering

We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher who can lead
research projects that contribute to a better understanding of the
science of climate and environmental change.

We are particularly interested in exploring climate consequences of
surface changes (e.g., ecosystem change, land use change). We are also
interested in extending science related to human-environment interaction
assessment (e.g., effect of human activity on water and energy
resources). The successful candidate will play a major role in planning
and executing these investigations, working in a diverse group that will
include modelers, analysts, and field researchers.

Specific research area sought includes:

Impact of ecosystem change on global carbon cycle

Carbon-climate interaction and/or Climate-ecosystem interaction

Climate change and phenology

Impacts of human-mediated land surface change (urbanization or
agriculture) on climate change

Climate change impact on energy-use

Typically, numerical models (e.g., ecosystem model, land surface model,
regional/global climate model, and Earth system model) are our primary
tool, but we would be open to using other tools such as satellite remote
sensing technique. In collaboration with many start-up companies in
Shenzhen, we are going to develop “cheap” and “high-tech” measurement
for environmental monitoring from local- to global-scale.

Required Qualifications:

PhD in atmospheric science, ecology, forest science, Earth system
science, applied mathematics, environmental science/engineering or other
relevant discipline

Strong quantitative foundation in statistics or numerical modeling

Demonstrated ability to design, conduct, and publish research related to
climate-ecosystem interactions, climate/environmental change

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Programming experience

The position starts immediately. This is a 1 year term appointment with
the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years based upon satisfactory job
performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational
needs. Salary for postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience
post-degree.
