Postdoctoral Research Fellow in African
Climate Science

Fixed term for 3 years
Expected start date: 1 April 2016

We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow (PDRF) for a newly funded
research programme 'UMFULA' (Uncertainty reduction in Models for
Understanding development Applications), which is funded through the
NERC-DFID Future Climate For Africa Programme, FCFA
(futureclimateafrica.org). Within the UMFULA project the climate science
team will seek to improve our understanding of the climate system over
Southern and Central Africa with a view to understanding the robustness
and credibility of climate model projections for the region over the
coming decades. The focus will be on high impact weather/climate events.

This will be addressed through a 'process-based' evaluation of climate
models, covering processes governing the mean state, variability and
change. We will examine the performance of models operating over a
hierarchy of scales, including high-resolution simulations. You will be
expected to undertake research in the above topics (in collaboration
with other members of the UMFULA consortium), lead in producing
peer-reviewed publications and develop climate outputs to feed into
other components of the UMFULA project. In addition you may also be
expected to lead grant applications to complement the project.

You must hold a doctorate in climate science preferably with experience
in tropical meteorology/climate science and modeling. The successful
candidate will be an ambitious scientist with a track record of
peer-reviewed publications.

Interested candidates are encouraged to make an informal enquires to
Professor Martin Todd (m.todd at sussex.ac.uk)
