Subject: Research Assistant Position in Wetland Biogeochemistry

The Roberts Lab of Ecosystem Ecology and Biogeochemistry=20
(http://robertsresearchlab.weebly.com/) at the Louisiana Universities=20
Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is seeking a research assistant in Wetland=20
Biogeochemistry to participate in a series of field/laboratory and=20
manipulative experiments studying the effects of the Macondo Oil Spill=20=

on coastal marsh ecosystems. The assistant will join a large, multi-
institution team of researchers in the Coastal Waters Consortium=20
(http://cwc.lumcon.edu/), a BP GoMRI-funded project studying the impacts=20=

of the oil spill and future spills on marshes and coastal environments.=20=

The position is associated with a collaborative subproject on wetland=20
biogeochemistry and microbial ecology led by Drs. Brian Roberts=20
(LUMCON), Anne Giblin (Marine Biological Laboratory), and Anne Bernhard=20=

(Connecticut College) and including post-docs Ariella Chelsky and Troy=20=

Hill (LUMCON); graduate students; research assistants / technicians; and=20=

undergraduate interns. The objectives of the project are to 1) improve=20=

our understanding of temporal and spatial patterns in marsh=20
biogeochemical process rates, associated microbial communities, and=20
factors regulating these communities and rates; and 2) evaluate the=20
impact of and recovery from oil exposure on marsh biogeochemical=20
processes and associated microbial communities. The research assistant=20=

will support the field and laboratory analytical activities designed to=20=

accomplish these objectives. The position will be based at LUMCON and=20
will require extensive field and laboratory work. This is a unique=20
opportunity to collaborate with top scientists from around the United=20
States in a large, interdisciplinary research project of great=20
importance to the US Gulf Coast and other ecosystems impacted by oil-
related activities.=20

Qualifications: The candidate must have a M.S. or B.S in ecology,=20
wetland science, biogeochemistry or a related field. Familiarity with=20
analytical instrumentation including autoanalyzers (for analysis of=20
inorganic nutrients), TOC/TN analyzers (DOC/TDN), elemental analyzers=20
(C, N), and/or gas chromatographs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) is desired. The=20
candidate will also be expected to participate in field work that may=20
require physical effort to transport equipment in field sites that are=20=

accessible only by small boats. The ability to work in a group setting=20=

is essential, as this researcher will work collaboratively with the PIs,=20=

post docs, students, and other research assistants/technicians on this=20=

project as well as on the larger Coastal Waters Consortium project. The=20=

position requires high organizational and communication skills as well=20=

as significant database management capabilities.=20

Duration and Start Date: Initial appointment is for 1 year and may be=20=

renewed for a total of 2.5 years with this funding, depending on=20
satisfactory performance. The desired start date is fall 2015.

Location: The position will be based at the Louisiana Universities=20
Marine Consortium (LUMCON) Marine Center in Cocodrie, LA (visit=20
http://www.lumcon.edu for information on the facility). The field sites=20=

are located along the Louisiana coast between LUMCON and the Mississippi=20=

River.=20=20=20

To Apply: Send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the name,=20
address, phone and email contact for at least three individuals=20
qualified to comment on scientific and work qualifications to Dr. Brian=20=

Roberts (broberts at lumcon.edu) with =93Wetlands Research Assistant=20
position=94 in the subject line. For questions or more information contac=
t=20
Dr. Roberts by email or phone (985-851-2821).

Deadline: Review of applications will commence immediately and continue=20=

until the position is filled.=20=20

Action Employer that actively seeks diversity among its employees.
