Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is seeking a research assistant in Wetland=20<br>
Biogeochemistry to participate in a series of field/laboratory and=20<br>
manipulative experiments studying the effects of the Macondo Oil Spill=20=<br>
<br>
on coastal marsh ecosystems. The assistant will join a large, multi-<br>
institution team of researchers in the Coastal Waters Consortium=20<br>
(<a href="http://cwc.lumcon.edu/" rel="noreferrer" target="_blank">http://cwc.lumcon.edu/</a>), a BP GoMRI-funded project studying the impacts=20=<br>
<br>
of the oil spill and future spills on marshes and coastal environments.=20=<br>
<br>
The position is associated with a collaborative subproject on wetland=20<br>
biogeochemistry and microbial ecology led by Drs. Brian Roberts=20<br>
(LUMCON), Anne Giblin (Marine Biological Laboratory), and Anne Bernhard=20=<br>
<br>
(Connecticut College) and including post-docs Ariella Chelsky and Troy=20=<br>
<br>
Hill (LUMCON); graduate students; research assistants / technicians; and=20=<br>
<br>
undergraduate interns. The objectives of the project are to 1) improve=20=<br>
<br>
our understanding of temporal and spatial patterns in marsh=20<br>
biogeochemical process rates, associated microbial communities, and=20<br>
factors regulating these communities and rates; and 2) evaluate the=20<br>
impact of and recovery from oil exposure on marsh biogeochemical=20<br>
processes and associated microbial communities. The research assistant=20=<br>
<br>
will support the field and laboratory analytical activities designed to=20=<br>
<br>
accomplish these objectives. The position will be based at LUMCON and=20<br>
will require extensive field and laboratory work. This is a unique=20<br>
opportunity to collaborate with top scientists from around the United=20<br>
States in a large, interdisciplinary research project of great=20<br>
importance to the US Gulf Coast and other ecosystems impacted by oil-<br>
related activities.=20<br>

Qualifications: The candidate must have a M.S. or B.S in ecology,=20<br>
wetland science, biogeochemistry or a related field. Familiarity with=20<br>
analytical instrumentation including autoanalyzers (for analysis of=20<br>
inorganic nutrients), TOC/TN analyzers (DOC/TDN), elemental analyzers=20<br>
(C, N), and/or gas chromatographs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) is desired. The=20<br>
candidate will also be expected to participate in field work that may=20<br>
require physical effort to transport equipment in field sites that are=20=<br>
<br>
accessible only by small boats. The ability to work in a group setting=20=<br>
<br>
is essential, as this researcher will work collaboratively with the PIs,=20=<br>
<br>
post docs, students, and other research assistants/technicians on this=20=<br>
<br>
project as well as on the larger Coastal Waters Consortium project. The=20=<br>
<br>
position requires high organizational and communication skills as well=20=<br>
<br>
as significant database management capabilities.=20<br>
<br>
Duration and Start Date: Initial appointment is for 1 year and may be=20=<br>
<br>
renewed for a total of 2.5 years with this funding, depending on=20<br>
satisfactory performance. The desired start date is fall 2015.<br>

Location: The position will be based at the Louisiana Universities=20<br>
Marine Consortium (LUMCON) Marine Center in Cocodrie, LA (visit=20<br>
